The 2025 Golden Globes are upon us. Set to take place on January 6, 2025, the event will be honoring the best in film and television of 2024. Among them, one of the nominees happens to be actor Kieran Culkin who has been nominated for the award of Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in any Motion Picture for his performance as Benji Kaplan in A Real Pain.
With Kieran Culkin receiving so much buzz for his Gloden Globes nomination, the actor recently sat down in an interview with The Guardian and remembered how he got actor Mark Ruffalo high during a play. Early in his career, the Golden Globes nominee starred in a play and, in a prank that he thought was funny at the time, he got the cast of James Lapine's The Moment When real weed and they got accidentally high.

Golden Globes nominee Kieran Culkin reflects on a early career prank
During the play in 2000, the actors were supposed to be smoking a fake joint of weed. However, a young Kieran Culkin at the time thought it might be funny to replace the fake joint of weed with a real thing.
"I was 17 and stupid," reflected the Golden Globes nominee.
In the play, Culkin was co-starring with actor Mark Ruffalo who is best known for portraying Hulk in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Ruffalo was the actor who was supposed to be smoking the fake joint with a co-star, but little did he know that he was smoking the real thing. At this point, the actor hadn't smoked weed in 10 years.
“I’m like, ‘I thought this was a good prank. I’m stupid. Oh my God, I’m so sorry.’ But actually, they loved it. Mark says, ‘I haven’t smoked pot in 10 years; the second half’s going to be so much fun,’" remembered lCulkin.
He added, "There was this other actor who had never smoked pot in her life. She goes, ‘Is this what being high is? This is lovely.’ And then Phyllis Newman comes in and goes, ‘I haven’t smoked pot since the 1960s. Thank you, darling.’"
However, Kieran Culkin did receive some tough feedback for his antics back in the day as well.
“Then the stage manager comes stomping in and goes, ‘I don’t care whose it is, or what happened, but Kieran, give me the joint. I sheepishly handed her the roach and she said, ‘Ruin your life on your own time,’” recalled the Golden Globes nominee.
Actor Mark Ruffalo also told this story on The Graham Norton Show in 2012. However, the actor didn't reveal exactly who had replaced the joint then. Well, it looks like fans now know who the culprit is.

A Real Pain is a buddy-comedy film directed by Jesse Eisenberg. The official synopsis for the film as per Searchlight Pictures reads as:
"Mismatched cousins David (Jesse Eisenberg) and Benji (Kieran Culkin) reunite for a tour through Poland to honor their beloved grandmother. The adventure takes a turn when the odd-couple's old tensions resurface against the backdrop of their family history."
