"I had no idea getting into this industry how many people have connections" - When Sydney Sweeney opened up about being an outsider in Hollywood

It may seem that Sydney Sweeney is at the heart of Hollywood right now, with the young actress being one of the most trending celebrities in the world. But the path to that was neither easy nor linear, especially when someone from the outside of Hollywood had to undertake the journey.

Sweeney grew up in a very different environment, and when she entered Hollywood, she did not have any connections to the top. So she had to work her way up, and even when she had made a mark with Euphoria and White Lotus, the actress felt that she was an outsider, something she discussed in detail with The Hollywood Reporter in an interview in 2022.

Talking about how she had to work hard to maintain her place being an outsider and expressing her astonishment at seeing so many people with connections in Hollywood, she told THR:

"The rejection you get while you’re trying to learn to be yourself is insane,...It’s insane how adults look at you....I had no idea getting into this industry how many people have connections. I started from ground zero, and I know how fucking hard it is. Now I see how someone can just walk in a door, and I’m like, ‘I worked my fucking ass off for 10 years for this.’"

As most know, Hollywood as an industry is much kinder to the ones connected to it, even if their talent is not in abundance. That's exactly opposite to what outsiders have to face when they step up.

In the same interview, Sydney Sweeney opened up about the humble beginning she had and what she had originally dreamed her success would bring.

Compared to many Hollywood stars who are active right now, Sydney Sweeney had a very different upbringing. She wasn't only the polar opposite of her character in Euphoria but she was also her High School valedictorian. She had strict parents and a strict upbringing in a small town near Spokane on the Washington-Idaho border.

She also opened up about the dreams she initially harbored and how when reality hit, she could not really achieve those, even though she had done a lot more than most dream of.

Shedding light on the financial difficulties she faced in her younger years, Sydney Sweeney said:

"We lived in one room. My mom and I shared a bed and my dad and little brother shared a couch."

Moreover, the relationship between her parents also allegedly deteriorated during this time, leading to more complications for her. So quite early in her life, her goal became earning money, and to achieve this, she continued to audition for a variety of roles.

She added:

"I thought that if I made enough money, I’d be able to buy my parents’ house back and that I’d be able to put my parents back together,...But when I turned 18, I only had $800 to my name. My parents weren’t back together and there was nothing I could do to help."

Of course, Sydney Sweeney has now reached a stage where money will not be a big concern to her. She has also achieved unparalleled stardom in the process.

Nevertheless, she may have to struggle to hold her place being a complete outsider. She has, however, built a place that is hard to ignore, and she will continue to do so in the future.
