The late-'90s cult classic slasher series I Know What You Did Last Summer is returning for another run with a reboot movie. The story is based on the eponymous novel by Lois Duncan and follows a group of young adults who are being chased by a hook-wielding murderer who is out for revenge a year after the group covered up an accidental murder.
With classic slasher tropes and a hint of American folklore, the movie was a hit at the box office, which led to the production of a string of sequels. Sony Pictures has announced another revival of the cult classic movie, which is expected to hit theaters next year.
Is there a release date for I Know What You Did Last Summer reboot?
Sony has confirmed that I Know What You Did Last Summer sequel will be released in theaters a year later, on July 18, 2025. The movie will be directed by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, who pitched the idea for the revival of the 1997 slasher flick, along with writer Leah McKendrick, to Sony in 2022.
Who is in the cast of I Know What You Did Last Summer 2025 reboot?
Madelyn Cline, known for starring in Neflix’s Outer Banks, and Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, and Camila Mendes, who played Veronica on CW’s Riverdale, will likely lead the cast of the reboot movie.
Mendes' recent credits include Upgraded, Música and the 2022 Netflix teen black comedy Do Revenge.
Tony Award nominee Sarah Pidgeon, Atlanta’s Tyriq Withers and Jonah Hauer -King, who is best known as Prince Eric from Disney’s live-action remake of The Little Mermaid, are also likely to join the case.
There's also a possibility that Jennifer Love Hewitt from the original movie may return as Julie. She has cryptically suggested that her return may be anticipated, which suggests that the creators are looking to revive old characters.
They even bring in the actors from the original movie. Jennifer Love Hewitt's full statement regarding her return reads as follows:
“It’s in the cooker, let me just say that. I’ve done a couple preliminary phone calls. …“Honestly, it’s just wild to even think about. Truly, if it comes together, I think I don’t even know how I’m going to feel, except extremely overwhelmed and grateful. Honestly terrified because it’s 26 years later.
“There’s power in being older. There’s power in having gone off and had three kids. There’s a sense of ‘I can do anything now.’ The vulnerability that was Julie James in one and two definitely doesn’t exist in this one, I don’t think. I’m excited to just show her grown up.”
Freddie Prinze Jr. is also in talks to reprise his role from the original, as Ray. However, it's not likely that Sarah Michelle Gellar will appear in the sequel as her character, Helen, was killed in a definitive way.
