Julia Roberts is perhaps the most iconic romantic comedy star of the 1990s, with films ranging from Pretty Woman to Notting Hill, all of which are considered among some of the best made in the genre. But Roberts has gone above and beyond being just a star of rom-coms, with her roles and movies earning as much as $3.9 billion globally, making her one of the most bankable stars working in Hollywood.

However, the actress, despite her appeal in the genre, stopped doing romantic comedies around the early 2000s and she addressed this in an interview with the New York Times in 2022 interview, where she stated a variety of reasons for this change, including her focus on her family life and the lack of great scripts in the genre.

In the 2022 interview, Julia Roberts told the New York Times:

"Here’s the thing: If I’d thought something was good enough, I would have done it. But I also had three kids in the last 18 years. That raises the bar even more because then it’s not only Is this material good? It’s also the math equation of my husband’s work schedule and the kids’ school schedule and summer vacation."

Pointing to her focus on her family life, Julia Roberts further expanded:

"I have a sense of great pride in being home with my family and considering myself a homemaker. For so much of my children’s younger life they would see their dad go off and I would work a little, but they almost didn’t notice. It was like I was only gone when they were napping or something."

Julia Roberts further explained how she also felt responsible for showing her children that she did insightful and meaningful work, which further made choosing films that were not up to par difficult for her.

"I do have a sense of responsibility"- Julia Roberts breaks down the reason for rejecting many romantic comedies

When someone is a parent and a professional, things simply get a different angle in most cases. For Roberts, who has been one of the most iconic actors of the past few decades, considering her family became important for her before picking out ordinary movie roles.

Hence, as she claimed, she focused on choosing only the kind of movies that would feel meaningful to her because she would have to sacrifice a chunk of family time to do the role. She elaborated:

"But as they get older, and particularly with my daughter, I do have a sense of responsibility for showing my children that I can be creative and that it’s meaningful to me — so meaningful that for periods of time I will choose to focus on that almost more than my family, which has been hard for me to come to terms with."

In this same interview, Roberts revealed how she almost passed up numerous other interesting roles like the one in August: Osage County, because she had family affairs to attend to.

It is great to see actors balancing family life perfectly with work and Julia Roberts is perhaps the most iconic example of that.

Julia Roberts is soon set to appear in After the Hunt, whose release date has not been revealed yet.
