Plot summary
In the Summers tells a poignant story about the changing dynamics of a parent-child relationship. It focuses on the divorced father, Vincente, spending time with his daughters, Violeta and Eva, over the course of four summers. Moreover, the film spans nearly two decades as the daughters move from young adolescence into early adulthood.
During their first visit, Violeta and Eva arrive in the sleepy desert town of Las Cruces, New Mexico, to spend summer at their father's Spanish Adobe-style home.
Their awkward encounter gives way to a memorable summer where Vincente shows the young girls around his hometown, buys them gifts, and takes them stargazing.
As the years progress, Vincente's alcohol addiction gets the better of him, making his daughters wary of his temper and unpredictable behavior. Moreover, both daughters get a different version of their father as Vincente shows far more attentiveness towards Violeta than Eva, whom he considers less smart.
As a result, Eva yearns for her father's love and affection more than Violeta.
She returns alone for the third summer as Violeta transitions back at home in California. Still seeking his approval, Eva helps around the house with Vincente's wife and newborn daughter, Natalia.
The film's final segment bears a stark contrast to its beginning. The distance between Vincente and his daughters has grown more over time as the young women choose to stay at a rented place upon arrival.
Inspite of Vincente getting his life together, they maintain a firm distance from him, signaling that it may have been too late for him to rekindle their broken bond after all.
