Pixar's Inside Out 2, the much-awaited sequel to the 2015 movie Inside Out has officially crossed the billion-dollar mark in its box office success. The movie is directed by the American filmmaker, Kelsey Mann, and is based on the story developed by Meg LeFauve and Dave Holstein. The movie was released in theatres on June 14, 2024.
With a production budget of $200 million, cutting the expenses on marketing, Inside Out 2 received highly positive reviews from the audiences. It also became the highest-grossing film of 2024, grossing over $1.6 billion worldwide. It is not just the highest-grossing film in Pixar history, but also the highest-grossing animated film of all time. The movie has also surpassed Barbie, which was the highest-grossing film of 2023 at $1.45 billion.
Disney's 2019 remake of The Lion King was originally the highest-grossing film, hitting $1.65 billion. However, since it was a live-action remake and not a complete animation, Inside Out 2 officially reached the top position. This comes as very good news for the company, after a series of successive failures in the line of Pixar movies.
The success of Inside Out 2 brings hope to upcoming Disney films
Inside Out 2 managed to win over Disney's earlier box office hits, including Disney's Frozen (2019), which had a box office collection of up to $1.45 billion. Moana, Zootopia, Toy Story 3, and Toy Story 4 are among some of Disney's most celebrated movies that have crossed the $1 billion mark.
Hence, with the positive reception Inside Out 2 is getting, Disney can hope that the planned sequels to their early successful franchises can hit the billion-dollar mark. The company can hope for the films to succeed Inside Out 2 in terms of profits.
The movie's cast of immensely talented voice actors has justified the new voices coming out as Riley moves into her teens. The cast includes names like Amy Poehler, Liza Lapira, Tony Hale, Phyllis Smith, Lewis Black, Grace Lu, Ayo Edebri, and Lilimar Hernandez.
The addition of the famous Stranger Things actress Maya Hawke, voicing the character of Anxiety, has added extra credits to the film. Along with being the most commercially successful animated film of all time, Inside Out 2 has been added up to the thirteenth position in the list of the highest-grossing films in history.
What is the story of Inside Out 2?
The story of Inside Out 2 begins two years after Riley's family moves from Minnesota to San Francisco. Riley Anderson is now a thirteen-year-old girl entering high school. The young girl, who previously only had five of her base emotions, including Joy, Fear, Sadness, Disgust, and Anger, is now hitting puberty, with which come several new emotions.
She begins to develop a sense of self-introspection and consciousness, leading to an array of completely new emotions knocking on her mind's door. The new emotions include Anxiety, Embarrassment, Envy, and finally Ennui. Riley and her still best friends Grace and Bree are invited to an ice hockey camp, where, if they qualify, will be joining the Firehawks, the school hockey team.
Riley has all the ambitions of reaching the position, but events take a different turn when she realizes her best friends won't be attending the same high school as her. During the camp, her high school coach is impressed with Riley's hockey-playing skills and invites the teen to skills camp. If Riley can successfully show off her talent at the camp, she could play as a freshman alongside her idol, Val Ortiz.
However, things change the night before the big day when Joy hits the red "puberty" button, which brings a range of completely new emotions to the mix. This is one of the high points in the film where Riley senses her new emotions taking place, which are led by the orange and frizzy-haired Anxiety.
Ennui likes to call herself "the boredom," and she mostly lies down on the couch scrolling through the phone. Boredom stands as one of the most relatable characters to teen audiences. They are all followed by a big boy completely hidden behind a hoodie and the painfully shy Embarrassment. Both of them reflect the start markers of Riley entering a new stage of her life, where she is not a kid anymore.
Riley has to make some big decisions as she has to choose between hanging out with her old friends or making way for her new (supposedly cool) friends like Val. There is a point where everything goes red, and Anxiety takes control of it all and bottles the rest of her emotions in a jar. This is something that the viewers had anticipated in the beginning when the emotion arrives.
This was the part that introduced Riley to the feeling of disdain and helplessness. The teen now must learn to take control of things before Anxiety makes things worse, and she has to do it all by herself, like an adult. The journey of Riley overcoming her fears and insecurities and becoming a confident young lady will bring a sense of fulfillment and awe in the minds of the viewers.
Inside Out 2 is a must-watch for all Disney animation fans. It is available for streaming on Apple TV Plus.
