Christopher Nolan cannot seem to stop breaking records, and after the immense success of Oppenheimer, the veteran director has added another big achievement to his name with Interstellar. Yes, the decade-old movie has recently become the highest-grossing IMAX re-release of all time. It is also now the 8th highest-grossing IMAX release.

Paramount and IMAX have capitalized on the demand for the movie among the audiences and have already expanded the domestic IMAX screen count to 320 this weekend, which has added a further $3.5 million domestically and $3.75 million globally. The 10-day domestic re-release total now stands at a massive $10.8 million. The movie's total collection in 2024 stands at $17.4 million.

As of now, Interstellar has taken the all-time worldwide IMAX total to $132.3 million, which makes Interstellar one of the highest-grossing IMAX releases of all time despite the movie being a decade old.

Interstellar IMAX re-release gross goes on to show that streaming trends have not yet taken over the film theatres completely and audiences are still more than eager to catch the magic of the big screens, especially when the big screens are also changing and innovating consistently.

Why Interstellar is attracting such a large mass of viewers

If there was one film in the past decade that would work on a huge IMAX screen, it would be Christopher Nolan's acclaimed sci-fi gem, Interstellar. Not only did the movie surpass expectations with its storytelling and star-studded cast and crew, but it also delivered perhaps the most visually stunning viewing experience of any sci-fi movie.

Not only does IMAX do justice to the incredible big-screen picturesque scenes in the Christopher Nolan movie, but this one is shot in 15/70mm, which means that it can be projected full-frame on IMAX and it outputs a massive 18k resolution, which makes every detail on the screen come out alive.

The film also features 64 minutes of exclusive IMAX aspect ratio, which brings out the perfect imagery of outer space, something that has also been attracting a lot of viewers.

So it is not a huge surprise that the movie's re-release on IMAX has drawn in such a huge crowd of viewers. The film is still running and it wouldn't really be a surprise to see this one break more records before the end of its theatrical run.

What is Interstellar about?

A 2014 epic science fiction drama film directed by Christopher Nolan, Interstellar is set in a dystopian future where Earth is suffering from catastrophic blight and famine, and scientists are attempting to find an alternate planet that would support civilization. The film is written by Jonathan Nolan, the brother of the Oscar-winning director.

Apart from a star-studded crew, which included cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema, editor Lee Smith, composer Hans Zimmer, and producer Emma Thomas, the film also features an immense acting ensemble, consisting of Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain, Bill Irwin, Ellen Burstyn, and Michael Caine, among many others.

The synopsis for the movie reads:

"When Earth becomes uninhabitable in the future, a farmer and ex-NASA pilot, Joseph Cooper, is tasked to pilot a spacecraft, along with a team of researchers, to find a new planet for humans."
