Barbie 2, the potential sequel to Greta Gerwig's 2023 film, has generated a lot of hype online due to recent reports by The Hollywood Reporter claiming the sequel is in the works. However, the representative for Warner Bros., the film's distributor, quickly debunked the rumors, making it clear that Barbie 2 is not in the development, as of this writing.

What is the latest update on Barbie 2?
On December 13, 2024, The Hollywood Reporter reported that Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach have a story in mind for Barbie 2. According to the publication's sources, the talented duo has pitched a story to Warner Bros. and the project is reportedly in the "early stages" of development.
However, the media outlet also quoted the studio representative debunking the claims:
"THR’s reporting is inaccurate."
Moreover, a representative for the filmmakers firmly denied that Barbie 2 is in the works by saying:
"There is no legitimacy to this reporting."
In the past, Greta Gerwig said that she would consider directing a sequel for Barbie only if she had a solid script to justify its return. While speaking at the West Hollywood Edition in March 2024, the Lady Bird director shared her thoughts about a potential sequel by saying:
"My North Star is 'What do I deeply love? What do I really care about?' Like, ‘What’s the story underneath this story?' And I think with Barbie, the story underneath this story was I loved Barbie..... And I loved everything about them and my mom was not sure about it. And I find that’s the story, that’s the generational story.....I’m always trying to find those undertows."
When pressed about the possibility of Barbie 2, she conceded:
"If I find the undertow, then we get it. If I don’t find an undertow, there’s no more."
Furthermore, the film's lead star and producer Margot Robbie told the Associated Press in November 2023 that Greta "put everything into this movie" and asserted that she "can’t imagine what would be next."

Greta, on the other hand, is working on the pre-production of the Chronicles of Narnia reboot for Netflix. Amy Pascal, who is a producer on the film, called the upcoming project as "rock and roll," while speaking to Deadline on December 9, 2024.
