Edge of Tomorrow, the 2014 science fiction film starring Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt, was recently added to Netflix. Commercially successful and critically acclaimed upon its release, the film has also been doing well on Netflix.
As per a report by The Direct on September 09, 2024, the film hit #3 on the US Top 10 Movie Charts on September 8 after its September 7 Netflix debut. On September 9, the film climbed to the second spot. Thus, it can be seen that the popularity of Edge of Tomorrow has not waned.
This success has prompted Tom Cruise's fans to wonder if a sequel to the hit film is in the works. There is no official announcement confirming a sequel yet. However, as per The Direct, Warner Bros. and Doug Liman, the director, are interested in making a sequel, which could become a possibility if some key factors work out.
Edge of Tomorrow might get a sequel in the future
On January 11, 2024, The Hollywood Reporter published a report on the recent deal between Warner Bros. and Tom Cruise. As per the report, the studio "hoped to lure Cruise back for a follow-up to the 2014 film Edge of Tomorrow."
This is not the first time a sequel to the film has been talked about. As per The Direct, attempts to get the sequel's production running has been going on since 2018. However, Blunt and Cruise's busy schedules have been an issue. Liman told Collider on January 14, 2021:
"If you can get Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt to commit to the movie, it's going to happen."
Meanwhile, on August 3, 2023, The Hollywood Reporter published a story in which Emily Blunt was reported to have said that she was "so ready" for Edge of Tomorrow 2.
Thus, as far as the possibility of a sequel is concerned, a lot depends on Tom Cruise. Speculations about the sequel only intensified after the actor entered a deal with Warner Bros. this year.
However, as per The Direct, the Hollywood legend might not be contemplating the sequel at the moment, given that he is focused on his next Mission: Impossible film. If he is ready to begin work on it after his current project, the sequel might indeed happen since the other parties involved are interested.
Exploring the plot of Edge of Tomorrow
The synopsis of the film on Netflix reads:
"Bill Cage is stuck in a time loop, reliving the day he died in battle — unless he can find a way to both survive and defeat the alien invaders."
The film borrows elements of action and science fiction to depict how an alien invasion endangers humanity. During a battle against the aliens in France, Cage kills an Alpha Mimic, eventually getting covered in its blood. This enables him to return to a certain point in the past every time he dies.
Cage teams up with Rita Vrataski and helps humanity against the Mimics using his power to restart the time loop. However, he has to overcome several obstacles before he can locate and reach the Omega Mimic, the mastermind of the Mimics who act like a superorganism.
In the film's climax, Rita sacrifices her life so Cage can confront the Omega and drop heavy explosives into its core. Upon succeeding in his quest, the alien invaders are wiped out, and the time loop comes to an end.
