Elevation is a dystopian action thriller film, directed by George Nolfi, which made its theatrical release on November 8, 2024. Written by John Glenn, Jacob Romanm, and Kennt Ryan, the story chronicles a post-apocalyptic future where planet Earth is habituated by alien monstrous beings that prey on humans.
Their only weakness is they can't go above 8000 feet, and hence only the humans living above this altitude have survived. Anthony Mackie plays the lead character Will, a father who must embark into the deadly lowlands to save his son. On his mission, he is supported by two characters, Nina and Katie.
The movie shares a similar name to Stephen King's 2018 suspense novella Elevation. However, the movie is not an adaptation of Stephen King's book. The book and the movie have completely different stories.
What is the story of Stephen King's novella Elevation
Published on October 30, 2018, King's novella Elevation revolves around Scott Carey, a resident of Castle Rock, Maine, who begins to notice strange changes in his body but can't comprehend the reason behind them. Scott goes on to reveal to his friend Doctor Bob Ellis that he is rapidly losing weight.
But Scott finds it hard to prove his condition because, on the outside appearance, he seems completely healthy. The situation gets creepier when Scott realizes he is not losing any weight but is losing mass. Upon learning that he may not have long to live, Scott decides to help his neighbors, a lesbian couple, open their dream restaurant.
As per a Cinema Blend article published on February 26, 2021, filmmaker Jack Bender revealed that he was working on an adaptation of King's Elevation. Bender is known for his earlier King adaptations, including Mr. Mercedes, Under The Dome, and The Outsider. While discussing his experience of working with the author, Bender said,
"He is very generous about that when it works. I've recently adapted a book of his called Elevation, which we're going to make into a film. And I invented some stuff and added, and was nervous because he'd never read anything I've written, only directed and produced. And needless to say I was nervous about it, but he loved it. He's very gracious, and he knows that when we make a TV show, there's going to be stuff added stuff taken away; that's just the way it goes."
Hence, it can be clearly summed up that George Nolfi's Elevation is not an adaptation of Stephen King's novella.

The central plot of the movie revolves around Will, a father living with his son on the mountaintops. The story of Will slowly shifts from his personal goal to navigating the wider picture of humanity's fight for survival.
