There has been longstanding speculation about Mattel’s upcoming live-action iteration of the Masters of the Universe, which will see a reboot following the original 1976 movie. The latest iteration, which is now set for a release on June 5, 2026, has been under development for many years but underwent a range of delays for many reasons.

This includes the COVID pandemic and the writer’s strike, which afflicted Hollywood until the beginning of the year. Set to be created by Mattel Films in collaboration with Amazon MGM, various updates about the upcoming project have come out in recent weeks.

This includes the fact that the highly anticipated project will be helmed by Travis Knight, who had previously worked on projects such as Bumblebee and Kubo and the Two Strings. Hence, while the director is well-versed in mainstream iterations of children’s franchises, another update is bound to further excite fans.

It comes in the form of Nicholas Galitzine, who was earlier announced as the ‘He-Man’ for the upcoming movie.

Nicholas Galitzine to star as He-Man in Masters of the Universe: Everything we know

Galitzine has previously been seen in multiple stellar projects, including Red, White, and Royal Blue, and The Idea of You, in which he starred opposite Anne Hathaway. However, as things stand, the upcoming movie appears to be his biggest thus far, as he is set to star as none other than He-Man, the protagonist of the franchise.

The role had previously gone to Dolph Lundgren in the original 1976 movie. However, the upcoming iteration is set to kick off Mattel’s rebooted Masters of the Universe franchise and sees Galitzine as the starring actor. Currently scheduled for a release on June 5, 2026, there is only limited information available about the project itself.

Regardless, apart from Travis Knight, Chris Butler has also been announced as the chief writer and will be penning the story for the movie. Furthermore, the upcoming iteration has a stellar production team, which includes Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal, Steve Tisch, and Mattel Films' very own Robbie Brenner.

While there are little to no details about what the narration might entail, the story itself is set to revolve around Prince Adam of Eternia, who is eventually seen transforming into the strongest man in the universe, He-Man.

Boasting a range of powers, such as unimaginable strength, super speed, and increased stamina and durability, He-Man must protect the planet against Skeletor, a role that will also be decided in the coming time.

Regardless, the upcoming Masters of the Universe iteration will see a reimagining of the entire saga, which suggests that there might be a range of changes with respect to the original Masters of the Universe narrative. While there have been various iterations from which the creators can take help, the only live-action adaptation has come in the form of the 1987 movie.

Furthermore, no information about the rest of the cast has been announced thus far. That of course, is down to the fact that there is still plenty of time before the movie is expected to undergo production. However, barring further delays, The Masters of the Universe project will be released on June 5, 2026.
