In Carry-On, a TSA agent named Ethan Kopek is forced to comply with the demands of a mysterious traveler who threatens to execute his pregnant girlfriend. No, the Netflix film is not based on a true story.

However, to give the movie a realistic feel, the show's producers consulted two former TSA officials and a former chief of Homeland Security. In addition to bringing in advisors to make the movie seem realistic, Carry-On was filmed at an old airport in New Orleans rather than at a studio.

Moreover, the actors of Carry-On were trained by these former TSA officials before shooting the movie. The officials were also present on set to assist director Jaume Collet-Serra in keeping elements of the film as realistic as possible.

All of the above contributed to giving the movie a realistic feel. However, events that occurred in the feature film have not taken place in real life.

Collet-Serra went the extra mile to ensure the movie feels like it can happen at any airport and at any time (including the holiday season). Speaking To Tudum, he said:

"We all wanted this to feel incredibly realistic, like the events of this movie could happen to any of us on any given day at any airport, and Jason [Bateman] and Taron [Egerton] delivered brilliant performances that helped ground our movie and make it feel real."

Jason Bateman stars as the blackmailing mysterious traveler and terrorist, while Taron Egerton plays the role of the TSA agent who is on the receiving end of his threats.

The cat-and-mouse chase between the two main characters triggers the involvement of the federal police, airport police, and local police.

This is why Collet-Serra brought on Dr. Erroll G. Southers, a counterterrorism expert who was a former chief of Homeland Security and head of the Los Angeles airport police department to realistically portray how these three law enforcement departments interact with each other during an emergency.

Southers told Netflix that:

"I was a technical adviser that was brought on for situational accuracy as it related to the agencies that are at an airport. So that when [the actors] were saying things, they were realistic and authentic."

About Carry-On

The action-thriller film, which is marketed as a Christmas movie, sees a TSA agent get blackmailed into allowing a dangerous package on a Christmas Eve flight.

Using an earpiece that was left at the security counter, the mysterious traveler communicates with Kopek and lets him know that failure to comply will not only lead to the execution of his girlfriend but will also have other "consequences."

The movie shows how an ordinary working professional is thrust into an extraordinary and dangerous situation. What will he do about this terrorist's demands? How can he alert the airport police and federal agents without tipping him off?

Besides Bateman and Egerton, Carry-On stars Sofia Carson as Kopek's pregnant girlfriend Nora, Danielle Deadwyler as Elena Cole, Logan-Marshall Green as Agent Alcott, and Dean Norris as Phil Sarkowski. Theo Rossi, Sinqua Walls, and Josh Brener also star in this movie.

The film has a run time of 1 hour and 59 minutes. It releases on Netflix on Friday, December 13, 2024.
