Uglies, directed by McG, is an upcoming science fiction film on Netflix. The official synopsis of the film reads:

“In a futuristic dystopia with enforced beauty standards, a teen awaiting mandatory cosmetic surgery embarks on a journey to find her missing friend.”

This story is set centuries into the future, when people have to undergo mandatory cosmetic surgeries in order to become “pretty”.

As the story unfolds, it becomes clear that there is more to these surgeries than meets the eye. The film is is based on the 2005 science fiction novel of the same name by Scott Westerfeld. Westerfeld will also executive produce the film adaptation.

Exploring the plot of Uglies’ source material

Scott Westerfeld’s dystopian science fiction takes place hundreds of years into the future, when most of humanity has been wiped out. This is a world devoid of any scarcity, and human beings now can afford to live a carefree life.

The protagonist, Tally Youngblood, is approaching her sixteenth birthday when the story opens. In this new world, the government pays for a customary cosmetic surgery that every 16-year-old has to undergo, in order to become “pretty”.

The “pretties” live in a different part of the city after their looks are surgically enhanced. However, Uglies presents a world that not only imposes unnatural beauty standards upon its subjects, it also hides something more sinister underneath.

Shortly before she has to undergo the initiation rite that is the surgery, with the help of Shay and David, Tally discovers that the surgery also alters the subjects’ brains so as to render them more passive and placid.

She also discovers the Smoke, which is a place where dissidents who have managed to evade the surgeries, live. After a series of adventures, Tally finds herself entrusted with the task of making a crucial difference in this deceitful world.

How many Uglies books are there?

There are 4 books in the series. The sequels to the original are:
