A new Star Wars trilogy is currently in development, as per recent reports. Lucasfilm has tapped writer Simon Kingberg to develop a new trilogy of films. Kinberg will also be producing these films with Lucasfilm's own Kathleen Kennedy, who has been involved with the franchise for a long time now. However, details on the trilogy itself remain sparse, as nothing has been revealed yet.
As per a report by Deadline on November 7, 2024, the upcoming Star Wars trilogy by Simon Kinberg will consist of episodes 10, 11, and 12, and will continue the Skywalker Saga, which ended with Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker in December 2019. However, the report also stated that Lucasfilm insiders disputed this claim, saying that the film would be a brand new story and stand on its own.
The films will join a list of other projects that are currently being developed by filmmakers James Mangold, Donald Glover, Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, and Taika Waititi. Simon Kinberg himself has previously been involved in developing projects for the Star Wars franchise as well.
He co-created the Rebels animated series with Dave Filoni and Carrie Beck. He was also a consultant on J.J. Abrams' revival of the Skywalker Saga in 2015, which began with Episode VII - The Force Awakens. Aside from that, Kinberg has also been involved with other major franchises, especially 20th Century Fox's X-Men films, where he produced and wrote many films too.
Simon Kinberg's Star Wars trilogy currently doesn't have a release date and is probably a few years away, but fans can expect more details in the future.
What other Star Wars films are in development?
As of now, Lucasfilm has multiple Star Wars films in development. Starting in 2026, fans will get to see The Mandalorian & Grogu, which will continue the adventures of Din Djarin and Grogu on the big screen. The film is currently slated to release in theaters on May 22, 2026, and will be directed by Dave Filoni.
Aside from that, Taika Waititi's film is in development too, but not much is known about it at the moment. Director James Mangold, who helmed Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny for Lucasfilm, is also currently developing the film Dawn of the Jedi. The movie will apparently focus on the first Jedi ever and how they came to be.
Director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy is also currently developing a film that will continue the story of Rey Skywalker after the events of The Rise of Skywalker. Daisy Ridley is set to reprise her role. Lucasfilm is also set to release a few other shows aside from the movies as well.
Starting on December 3, fans will once again go back to the galaxy far, far away when Star Wars: Skeleton Crew from Jon Watts premieres on Disney+. A second season of Andor, which will conclude the character's story, is set to premiere on Disney+ next year as well.
