Is a Practical Magic sequel happening? Details explored 

Director Griffin Dunne’s romantic drama film Practical Magic was released in October 1998. It was based on the 1995 novel of the same name, penned by Alice Hoffman.

With a budget of $75 million, the film collected a total of $68.3 million, as its theatrical run was not a success. However, the film still maintains an IMDb rating of 6.3 out of 10 and has gained good viewership over the years.

There's good news for Practical Magic fans, as Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman are already in negotiations to come back for Practical Magic 2. Yes, the Owens sisters can be seen getting back together. The news of the sequel was announced by Warner Bros studio via its social media channel on June 10, 2024.

There's no tentative release date announced yet for Practical Magic 2.

Practical Magic 2 is happening as confirmed by Warner Bros studios via its social media channels. Akiva Goldsman who wrote the previous film along with Adam Brooks and Robin Swicord is also returning once again to write the screenplay for its sequel.

The film will be produced by Bullock, Kidman, and Denise Di Novi, who is the director of the first part.

Sandra Bullock who starred as Sally Owens and Nicole Kidman who starred as Gillian Owens ~ the two cursed sisters can be returning for the sequel and are in talks to return as we already know. The rest of the cast has not been confirmed yet, and nothing about the plot too has been revealed.

Practical Magic (1998) is the story of two witch sisters, who were raised in a small town by their eccentric aunts, following the death of their parents. They inherited the gift of practical magic from their parents, and they must use it to overcome any obstacle in life. They were also cursed to not find lasting love ever.

In the film, Sally tries to live a normal life by keeping the magic away but fails eventually when her husband dies. In contrast, Gillian is seen embracing her magical powers. The magical sisters finally reunite when Gillan gets involved in a toxic relationship. To save Gillian, Sally puts Belladonna into Jimmy’s (Gillian's husband) drink, which kills him.

After his death, the sister duo tries to resurrect him using a forbidden spell, and upon revival, Jimmy again tries to kill Gillan because of which Sally kills him again. They are seen burying his remains in their garden. In the end, the family curse in the broken.

The synopsis of the film as per Rotten Tomatoes reads as -

"Sally (Sandra Bullock) and Gillian Owens (Nicole Kidman), born into a magical family, have mostly avoided witchcraft themselves. But when Gillian's vicious boyfriend, Jimmy Angelov (Goran Visnjic), dies unexpectedly, the Owens sisters give themselves a crash course in hard magic."

It continues:

"With policeman Gary Hallet (Aidan Quinn) growing suspicious, the girls struggle to resurrect Angelov -- and unwittingly inject his corpse with an evil spirit that threatens to end their family line."

The film starred Alice Hoffman, Robin Swicod and Akiva Goldsman among others. In an interview with heyalma in October 2021, Alice Hoffman, the main lady who wrote the magical story, said:

“I love the movie. It’s different than the book. The movie always has to be different than a book because you’re in such a different medium. But I feel so lucky that all those truly great actresses are in one movie."

Hoofman continued:

"The fact it’s about women and women’s relationships — at its core, it’s about a form of sisterhood — I think has made it more popular over the years. So, it’s kind of a cult movie. I feel really lucky to have been involved with it.”
