After years of hiatus, Disney finally confirmed the return of the Princess Diaries franchise with Princess Diaries 3. It is officially confirmed that Adele Lim will work with Disney as the director of the much-anticipated film.
Adele Lim made her directorial debut in 2023 with the bold R-rated comedy movie Joy Ride. Lim has also written Disney's 2021 animated fantasy adventure movie, Raya and The Last Dragon which was nominated in the Oscar for best animated feature.
The beloved film Princess Diaries 3 will be produced by Debra Martin Chase who launched the film franchise. Naia Cucukov and Melissa Stack will work as executive producers in this movie. Flora Greenson will be writing the screenplay.

On October 4, 2024, Anne Hathaway subtly announced the news of Princess Diaries 3 with a video interspersed with clips from the first two installments. Reportedly, Princess Diaries 3 has been in work since 2022. Last year, the actress also gave hints about the progress of the movie in an interview with V Magazine, saying:

Plot of the series and what to expect from Princess Diaries 3
The story revolves around the character Mia Thermopolis, an introverted high school student who finds out that she is the heir to the throne of Genovia. She is soon entrusted with the challenges of her new royal life.
In the second installment, the story continues with Mia being a college graduate, and preparing for her wedding with her childhood friend Michael. Nevertheless, her grandmother, the Queen has other plans in her mind. The Queen insists that Mia, marry the Prince to secure the future of Genovia.
In the third installment (Princess Diaries 3), the film is expected to continue the story from the 2001 original and 2004 sequel rather than rebooting the series. Plot details and overall cast haven't been confirmed yet, except for the possibility of Anne Hathaway reprising her role.
