Director Ridley Scott is set to develop a new Alien film for 20th Century Studios. The Hollywood Reporter revealed that another sequel is in the works for his production company, Scott Free Productions, but did not provide many details about the project.
This announcement follows the success of Alien: Romulus, released in 2024 and executive-produced by Scott. The new film may explore the universe after Romulus or revisit the stories from the previous prequels, Prometheus and Covenant.
Though, it is possible that Scott’s new project might explore a completely different storyline that has not been a part of previous films in the franchise.
What is the Alien franchise about?
The Alien franchise is a fictional horror series that began with the story of officer Ellen Ripley and her battles with an extraterrestrial life form. The series has since evolved into sequels and prequels as well over the years.
The story takes place roughly during the 22nd and 24th centuries as a constant struggle between humanity and the Xenomorph parasitic beings. Humans usually come across them on space journeys. They often end up in the clutches of these extraterrestrial beings due to the manipulative nature of the Weyland-Yutani Corp organisation.
The series has also come up with a science-fiction origin for the human race itself. It focuses on an ancient humanoid species called the Engineers, who start the evolution of mankind. However, one of the Engineers' experiments goes wrong, resulting in the mutation of the predatory race as well.
Over the years, the franchise has developed into several books, comics, and video games. Director Ridley Scott is also working on a new television series titled Alien: Earth for FX on Hulu.
