With Candyman being such an iconic horror icon, fans often wonder whether Todd was the only actor to portray this character or if others stepped in to play the role as well. However, Tony Todd was indeed the only actor ever to portray the horror character. As the original and sole Candyman, he helped establish the character as a horror icon.
Tony Todd appeared as the titular character in four films: Candyman, Candyman 2: Farewell to the Flesh, Candyman 3: Day of the Dead, and a direct sequel to the original film released in 2021 simply titled Candyman. In these films, Tony Todd's character is a ghost who kills anyone who summons him.
Who is Candyman?
In the Candyman movies, the titular character is portrayed by actor Tony Todd. His real name is Daniel Robitaille, and he takes on the mantle of the Candyman, a vengeful spirit who haunts those living on the land where he was killed. He carries a very tragic backstory where he was killed in a hateful attack for being in an interracial relationship.
Sometime in the 1800s, a man who was said to be a slave came into great fortune during the American Civil War. He had a son whom he sent to some of the best schools, and the boy grew up to be a very kind man and a painter famous for his portraits. In 1890, he was hired to paint the portrait of a landowner's daughter, who was described as a white virgin.
The painter and daughter fell in love, and the landowner got to know about this. He had the painter lynched and killed in a brutal manner. They sawed off his right hand and covered him in honey, causing bees to sting him to death. After his death, he was christened as the Candyman, with his ashes scattered around the region.
He returns as an urban legend who haunts and kills people in the area where he was murdered. To summon him, a person has to say his name in front of the mirror five times.
