Transformers One is set to bring a fresh perspective to the iconic franchise. The latest installment in the long-running series promises to explore the origins of the Transformers universe. Over the years, the franchise has experienced its fair share of ups and downs, with the early live-action films often getting criticized for their over-the-top action and lack of depth.
However, with Transformers One, Paramount Pictures and Hasbro are returning to the roots of the saga with a richly animated prequel that explores the war for Cybertron.

Transformers One is indeed a prequel. It stands apart from the earlier films of the franchise, which dealt with battles fought primarily on Earth by the Transformers.
The origin of Transformers One can be traced back to 2015, soon after the successful commercial release of Transformers: Age of Extinction. Motivated by the success of the film, Paramount Pictures assembled a group of writers, led by Akiva Goldman, to create new ideas for the franchise.
Among the ideas pitched, the story of Cybertron's fall stood out, leading to the development of this prequel. In 2020, the project was officially handed to Josh Cooley, best known for directing Toy Story 4. With Cooley’s background in animation, Transformers One is expected to blend action with emotional depth, making it a potentially groundbreaking addition to the franchise.
What is Transformers One about?
Transformers One is dedicated to the history of Cybertron’s destruction and the biographies of the most prominent residents of that planet, namely Optimus Prime and Megatron. It will explore how and why Optimus Prime and Megatron turned against each other, thus impacting the fate of Cybertron, the home planet of the Transformers.
The film intends to go deep into the mythos of the franchise which have only been referenced in the previous films and animation series. It will cover the battles and betrayals that defined the early days of the Transformers saga.
Transformers One is expected to be the first film of a trilogy, as it sets the foundation for a broader exploration of the war for Cybertron.
Voice cast list
The film enlists some of the biggest actors in Hollywood to voice the characters. Brian Tyree Henry and Chris Hemsworth will play Megatron and Optimus Prime respectively.
Previously, veteran voice actor Peter Cullen had been the voice of Optimus Prime since the 1980s, in both television and film roles. Chris Hemsworth is expected to voice over mostly for Orion Pax, the younger version of Optimus Prime in Transformers One.
Scarlett Johansson will voice over Elita One, who was once a simple working-class woman who eventually became an important member of the Autobot resistance.
Comedian and actor Keegan-Michael Key will be the voice of Bumblebee. TV star Jon Hamm will do the voice-over for Sentinel Prime and Steve Buscemi will play Starscream.
Veteran actor Laurence Fishburne will bring life to Alpha Trion. Vanessa Liguori will play Airachnid. Jason Konopisos-Alvarez, Jon Bailey, and Evan Michael Lee will voice over for Shockwave, Soundwave, and Jazz respectively.
For the unversed, Transformers One is scheduled to be released on September 20, 2024.
