Uglies 2 is the next stop for fans after the initial movie opened up to a lukewarm reception. The first installment was released by Netflix on September 13, 2024. Directed by Joseph McGinty Nichol, it is a dystopian science fiction movie based on Scott Westerfield's 2006 novel of the same name.
Uglies is the first book in Westerfield's trilogy, which is followed by Pretties and Specials. The writer went on to add a fourth novel to the series named Extras. Considering, there is so much content to work on, the fans will likely have Uglies 2, but nothing has been officially confirmed yet.
The first movie ended on a cliffhanger, leaving audiences craving to see what happened to Tally Youngblood after she turned herself into one of the 'Pretties'. On September 10, 2024, Scott Westerfeld was interviewed by That Hashtag Show. When asked if there will be a sequel, Scott replied,

Although no official confirmation has been given by Netflix on the release of Uglies 2, if the chronology of Scott Westerfeld's trilogy is followed, then the sequel is most likely going to be called Pretties.
It was back in September 2020, when Netflix acquired the rights to the first novel. The team completed its filming in late 2021 but required reshoots in 2024 before it was released in September 2024.
Considering the time required for the production of Uglies, it is likely that it will take a couple of years for the sequel to hit the screens. Joey King, in a conversation with Screen Rant, published on September 11, 2024, stated,
"There's more books. I'm not saying much right now. We're recited for people to see this one, and we're excited for the future of these characters and to see what people enjoy."
As of now, Uglies has a 5.0/10 on IMDb and a 17% on Rotten Tomatoes' Tomatometer. The production of Uglies 2 depends on how well Uglies performs as well as Netflix's decision to turn this into a possible franchise.
What to look for in Uglies 2?
Uglies shares a close resemblance to the main plot of the novel. The story depicts a dystopian future where humans have depleted all the natural resources. To survive, scientists have evolved genetically modified orchids that provide the source of power generation.
On the planet, every human is considered to be born ugly. They are supposed to undergo a surgical procedure to sculpt them into perfect creatures. This is the only way they can enter the utopian society only meant for the "pretties".
Tally is a young girl who refuses to undergo the procedure when she turns sixteen. She knows that the surgery is meant to decrease the subject's mental capacity, making them easier to control. This is what happened to her best friend Peris. On the way to rebel against the powerful forces, she finds David as a close companion.
The only deviation that the movie has from the book is with the fate of Peris. During the end of Uglies, Peris falls from a great height, while it is not mentioned in the book. Hence, the viewers can expect the ruthless super soldier to make a return if Uglies 2 is made in the future. Tally allows Dr Cable to turn herself into a 'Pretty' to test Mandy's cure, which is meant to heal the pretties. Scott's second novel Pretties starts right off where the first movie ended.
The sequel to the novel follows Tally's adventures as part of the new community while still under the radar of the Crims. Zane, the leader of the Crims, doubts her past life and tracks her whereabouts, but things take a different turn when they end up falling in love. This leads to a big crack between Tally's past life and her upcoming future.
If Pretties is turned into a movie, we can expect it to come with tons of plot twists, paving the way for Scott's universe to expand.
