By now, Timothée Chalamet is one of the biggest names in Hollywood, and at the age of 29, the young actor has already achieved what most dream of. The ex-Columbia University student has already bagged Oscar nominations, BAFTA nominations, and Golden Globe nominations, and is widely considered to be one of the finest actors in Hollywood right now, thanks to his myriad of amazing roles.
However, it may come as a shock that Timothée Chalamet was not someone actively seeking the limelight from a young age. Rather, the actor had spoken to Bwog in 2013, shortly after beginning his acting career, where he recalled that he was not particularly fond of acting from a young age.
Chalamet said:
"No, actually I really didn’t like acting growing up because I was doing commercials and things like that as a kid. I think it’s probably healthy that I didn’t like it."
He expanded:
"It must imply something about my character that I didn’t enjoy just standing around smiling for five hours in front of a camera. It’s all so fake, as it should be when you’re five–you don’t really have anything to add artistically yet, or you really shouldn’t at five years old."
Timothée Chalamet went on to recall how as he grew up, he got into performing arts, and how his views towards acting changed completely.
"It doesn’t have to be this kind of machine of fakeness"- Timothée Chalamet on slowly developing his love for acting
While Timothée Chalamet did make valid points about why he did not like acting when he was younger, he also recalled how he fell in love with the craft and how he realized that acting did not always need to be fake or superficial, something that is quite visible in his roles, which have always been praised for their authenticity.
Chalamet added:
"Once I got to high school–I went to a performing arts school called LaGuardia–I had some excellent teachers and really fell in love with it. I saw that it could be and should be treated as a craft, it doesn’t have to be this kind of machine of fakeness or anything like that."
So as the young actor grew up to like acting, he went on to give a chain of phenomenal performances, all of which are widely remembered and celebrated today.
However, though he started liking acting and got invested in it, Timothée Chalamet also expressed his inability to understand the hype around famous actors. Rather, in this same interview, Chalamet explained that he grew up as a sports fan more than a television or movie fan, which made him question the treatment entertainers got.
He said:
"As far as actors or entertainers go, I don’t really get that. I’m thankful that I don’t flip out, since I have to work with these people. It does me a disservice if I look at them and treat it as if I’m working with a god or a legend."
Interestingly, within years of this interview, Chalamet became one of the most hyped actors all around. But perhaps the intrinsic beliefs that he harbored while growing up keep him grounded to the level that he never falters while acting and continues treating it as a craft.
Timothée Chalamet will soon appear in Marty Supreme, which is in its post-production stage.
