Jackpot is an action comedy film starring Awkwafina and John Cena in the lead roles. The film, written by Rob Yescombe and directed by Paul Feig, is filled with over-the-top action and hilarious verbal banter between the characters.
The film is set in 2030, post-Great Depression Los Angeles, where a lottery is drawn every month, giving one lucky individual a chance to win a Jackpot. But there's a catch - if the winner is killed before sundown by someone with a losing ticket, the killer gets to keep all the money.
Awkwafina plays Katie, the 'lucky' lottery winner, while John Cena is Noel, the contractual protector, who vows to save her from attackers. Initially, Katie is suspicious of Noel's true intentions, but she soon realizes that Noel is truly a benevolent person, who's interested in something more than money.
Noel just wanted to help Katie in Jackpot
It's 2030, and Los Angeles has gone crazy. The film opens with American Pie's Seann William Scott running away from crazy civilians, trying to kill him using whatever they can.
According to the rules of the Jackpot, the losers can't use guns or kill other losers in their pursuit. Unfortunately, Scott is killed by a nice old grandma, who wins $22 million for murder.
Unaware of this new craziness, Kati, has returned to LA after several years to pursue her acting career. Little did she know that a bad Airbnb host and a weird audition were to be the least of her worries. She accidentally signs up for the lottery and wins it, making herself the target of the entire city, full of crazy people wanting to kill her at all costs.
However, while she's being mauled by a group of Barbie-lookalikes, rookie martial artists and yoga enthusiasts, a suited-up gentleman Noel, with a wasp-sting gun comes to her rescue. Noel promises to keep her safe till sundown for 10% of the lottery.
Katie is pretty soon fed up with all the chaos and wants nothing to do with the lottery. Noel agrees to take her out of town, which would automatically disqualify her.
Katie is perplexed, as doing it would mean Noel would risk his life for nothing. She is extremely suspicious but soon realizes that Noel is a nice guy who just wants to help people.
Later, the viewers find out the heartbreaking reason behind his motivation to be a savior.
Louis Lewis killed Noel's team members
To evade the attackers, Katie and Noel rush to Machine Gun Kelly's house, who apparently, has a panic room.
They knock Kelly out with the wasp gun and get inside the panic room, but Katie's cunning AirBnB host Shadi finds the passcode. Seeing no other option left, Noel calls an elite agency headed by his former mercenary teammate Louis Lewis, played by Simu Liu, who's also the only living member of that team.
The rest of them died in a mission, for which Noel blamed himself because he had left the mission in the middle. Noel had found out that his superiors were making him do dirty work and kill innocent people.
Louis promises to keep Katie safe for 30% of the Jackpot, but Noel deduces that Louis' agency is fraud and has been killing the winners for the jackpot. In the subsequent confrontation, it's revealed that Louis killed Noel's teammates during a mission for money.
Katie blows up Louis Lewis
Katie somehow runs away from Louis, but Noel is taken as their prisoner. Louis threatens to kill Noel if Katie doesn't come back. Katie's mother was dead, and her father had run away with her entire life savings. The only meaningful relationship she has made is with Noel, so she comes back to save him.
In the final showdown at the Hollywood theatre, Katie and Noel are attacked from every side. The crazy LA people, Louis's agency thugs and Katie's new set of fans, all assemble at one place.
Katie manages to dodge almost all her attackers, but with just one minute left to sundown, she's pursued by Louis as she's hanging on top of a theatre prop. When it seems like she won't make it, she uses Louis' pocket grenades to blow him to pieces, winning the Jackpot and surviving the day.
The film ends with Katie and Noel opening their own Jackpot savior agency, children with shit*y parents center and a ' eat pizza from trash-themed restaurant'. Also, they buy a superyacht and become spoiled billionaires.
