Jailbreak: Love on the Run is a cautionary tale about the extent of love that shocks us to the core
Jailbreak: Love on the Run begins when Vicky White meets Casey White in 2020 and the two fall in love, sharing many intimate phone calls. Vicky was the assistant director of operations and was awarded the “Corrections Officer of the Year” in the past. Liked by both colleagues and inmates, nobody could fathom what she would do next.
In 2022, Vicky White told her colleagues that she was ready to retire after having worked for 17 years at the Lauderdale County Detention Center in Florence, Alabama. She complained that the long hours had taken its toll on her and she was ready to relax now. After celebrating her last day and retirement, she did something nobody had anticipated.
Vicky used the very last day of her job, April 29, 2022, to break out Casey White, the inmate with whom she had started a relationship. Vicky made up the excuse of taking Casey to the Florence courthouse for a mental health evaluation before his trial. But there was no appointment in reality; it was just an excuse to break him out of prison.
Jailbreak: Love on the Run is an up-close-and-personal recap of Vicky and Casey's love saga told through narratives, interviews and even security camera footage that depicts her carrying out her daring scheme. There are also audio recordings of her phone calls with her incarcerated beau, which add further drama to the whole epic.
Told via a first-hand account from Vicky White’s friends and former colleagues, the Netflix true-crime documentary is a cautionary tale giving a glimpse at the foolhardy acts that love can drive people to commit and the accompanying consequences.
To feel sorry or be angry? The Netflix documentary toes the line
Casey White was serving a 75-year sentence for many brutal crimes and was heading to trial for a capital murder which would have resulted in him going to death row. So the pair had to act quickly to get him out of prison before it would come to that.
Vicky and Casey were eventually tracked down in Evansville. But Vicky shot herself when their car ran into a ditch as they tried to escape law enforcement. She died shortly afterward in an Indiana hospital.
Casey, meanwhile, was charged with escape in the first degree and felony murder in connection with Vicky’s death. He initially pleaded not guilty to both charges but later pleaded guilty to the first in exchange for dropping the second. He's currently serving a life sentence in prison and will not be eligible for parole until 2081.
It was clear that the duo shared an intimate and real relationship as Casey was found referring to Vicky as his wife even though they weren't married. Jailbreak: Love on the Run follows the forbidden and doomed romance between an inmate and an officer, which leaves viewers too shocked for words.
