James Gunn explains why The Batman 2 was delayed

The Batman 2 is the upcoming sequel to Matt Reeves's 2022 film, The Batman. The dark and gritty film launched a branch of the DC Universe, which became The Batman Universe. The Universe was also supposed to include many shows such as Gotham P.D., Arkham Asylum, and The Penguin, only the latter of which saw the light, and the others were reportedly shelved.

It was recently reported that the film was pushed back a year and will come out in 2027. While responding to an inquiry about the same through his threads account, James Gunn revealed that the film has been delayed because a full script is not ready yet.

The Batman stars Robert Pattinson as the billionaire Bruce Wayne, who lives the double life as a vigilante in the night. Alongside Pattinson were Zoë Kravitz, Paul Dano, Jeffrey Wright, John Turturro, Peter Sarsgaard, Andy Serkis, and Colin Farrell in prominent roles.

The Batman 2 script is not ready yet

A user on Threads shared a report by The Hollywood Reporter, which stated that The Batman 2, directed by Matt Reeves has been pushed to 2027. The user wrote:

"Hello @jamesgunn. Can you please confirm whether this is true or add some more context (if possible)?"

Responding to the Thread, the CEO of DC Studios, James Gunn, confirmed that the film has been pushed back a year. He also disclosed that this decision was due to a lack of a full script. He wrote,

"Sure. Yes, it is true. The only reason for the delay is there isn’t a full script (those of you who follow me here probably know that already). Matt is committed to making the best film he possibly can, and no one can accurately guess exactly how long a script will take to write."

Gunn continued:

"Once there is a finished script, there is around two years for pre-production, shooting and post-production on big films."

The Batman 2 is the planned sequel for the 2022 film, which has been under pre-production for almost three years. The film would mark the return of Robert Pattinson in the titular role. Further details about the film have been kept under wraps.

After the critical and viewer response to the recently released spin-off series The Penguin, starring Colin Farrel and Cristin Millioti, the popularity of The Batman Universe has increased.

The film's production had already been hampered by the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike, which had further raised speculation about the film getting delayed. The film, which was scheduled to come out in 2026, has now been scheduled to be released on October 1, 2027, which will be 5 and a half years after the last film.
