Janet Planet, an indie film that tells a coming-of-age story, released in the United States on June 21, 2024. The movie, which lasts approximately 113 minutes, looks into the complex relationship between a mother, Janet, and her daughter, Lacy.

Janet is portrayed as a single mother who consistently makes poor choices in men, choices her daughter Lacy finds difficult to overlook. Meanwhile, Lacy is shown as someone who's highly reliant on her mother and constantly seeks her attention, a fact Janet is aware of but doesn't point at explicitly.

Janet is preoccupied with things that are going on in her life, especially her love life. Throughout the film, she navigates various relationships, some casual and others more serious, while also trying to care for her daughter who's reluctant on sharing her mother with anyone.

However, eventually, none of these relationships work out, and by the end of the film, Janet is content to have her own time, not tied down to anyone, while enjoying the company of men. Lacy, meanwhile, has also reached a space where she's not as heavily reliant on her mother as she used to be but still needs her to feel comfortable about a few things.

At the start of Janet Planet, the character Janet, a practicing acupuncturist, is shown to be in a relationship with a middle-aged man who suffers from severe migraines and often displays erratic behavior due to his condition.

Lacy is uncomfortable with Wayne's presence in their home, and she makes her feelings clear. She resents having to share her mother with him.

In one part of the film, when Wayne is dealing with his health problems, Lacy shows up, and in a moment of anger, Wayne slams the door in her face. Shortly after this incident, Lacy recommends that Janet end her relationship with Wayne. It's not long after Lacy's advice that Janet and Wayne decide to part ways.

Why does Janet and Regina have a fallout in Janet Planet?

Janet and Regina have a history together, but their bond becomes stronger only after Regina ends her relationship with her boyfriend, Avi, a cult leader. Following her breakup, Regina moves into Janet's house, which once more forces Lacy to share her living space with someone other than her mother.

However, Lacy seems to tolerate this arrangement better than she did with Wayne, even though she still feels somewhat uneasy with Regina's subtle criticisms directed at her.

Unlike Janet's former roommate, Wayne, Regina is brutally honest and doesn't hesitate to confront Janet about her mistakes, particularly regarding her romantic decisions.

At first, Janet isn't particularly affected by Regina's comments. However, shortly after, a conflict arises between Regina and Janet, and, eventually, it becomes clear that the connection between the two has changed following their disagreement.

Later, Regina is shown running an ice cream shop, which Lacy decides to visit, implying that Regina has left Janet and Lacy's household.

What happens between Janet and Avi in Janet Planet?

In Janet Planet, Janet confidently asserts that she attracts men, but mostly the wrong type. As a result, when she encounters Avi, (Regina's ex who leads a cult) following a fallout with Regina, she becomes intrigued by him.

Initially, she chooses to give Avi a chance and enjoys spending time with him. However, as their courtship progresses, she begins to realize that she doesn't truly enjoy his company and notices several traits in him that straddle the line between manipulative and persuasive.

Yet, since Janet is now somewhat more aware of her choices in romantic partners than she was before and understands that it would be unwise to pursue her relationship with Avi. Eventually, she decides to end things before they become more serious.

Janet Planet is available in theatres across the United States and on several streaming platforms like Amazon Prime Video, Max, Hulu, Google Play Movies and Apple TV Plus.
