Saturday Night is the final official name for Jason Reitman's much-anticipated movie, the project that was earlier titled SNL 1975. Reitman co-wrote the movie with Gil Kenan. The duo had worked together for Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire earlier this year, which became a major box office success.

The Reitman-directed movie is a biopic that tries to document everything that happened behind the scenes behind the airing of NBS's Saturday Night, now known as Saturday Night Live, back in 1975.

As per a Variety article published on July 30, the movie is going to hit the theaters this fall, on October 11, 2024, by Sony Pictures Releasing. This date marks the 50th anniversary of the iconic NBC comedy show. The first episode was hosted by George Carlin and included Janis Ian and Billy Preston as guest musicians and premiered on NBC. The movie will narrate all the events that led to the premiere of this very first episode.

Jason Reitman, Jason Blumenfeld, Gil Kenan, and Peter Rice serve as the producers of the movie. JoAnn Perritano and Erica Mills serve as its executive producers. The official synopsis of the movie reads,

"A ferocious troupe of young comedians and writers changed television forever."

Everything we know about the movie Saturday Night

Jason Reitman announced back in May 2023 that he would be co-writing, directing, and producing a film that would be based on the history behind the iconic comedy show Saturday Night Live in association with Sony Pictures. Reitman developed the screenplay with Gil Kenan, with whom he had worked together in earlier films like Ghostbusters: Afterlife (2021) and the recent hit Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire (2024). Together they took surveys and interviewed the living members, who were part of the show during its first season.

The movie will showcase all the hardships and chaos mixed with humor and all the efforts that led to that first episode getting aired on October 11, 1975, which then created history. Shooting for the movie primarily began in Atlanta and Fayetteville in the country of Georgia in March 2024. On July 30, 2024, the movie's official title was changed from SNL 1975 to Saturday Night.
