Jesse Eisenberg’s current nationality explored as actor reveals he filed for Polish citizenship

The Social Network star Jesse Eisenberg is on his way to becoming a Polish citizen. In an interview with Polish outlet Głos Wielkopolski, Eisenberg revealed that he had applied for Polish citizenship 9 months ago. The actor noted that all the paperwork was filed and all that was required was the final signature. The actor, whose family was from the south-east of Poland, wanted to have a better bond with the country.

The actor is currently an American citizen born in Astoria, Queens, New York, and raised in New Jersey. Eisenberg's wife, Indiana native Anna Strout also shares Polish ancestry with the actor revealing that her family was from Łódź in Poland.

"Poland has made me feel a real connection to something historically larger than myself" Jesse Eisenberg

Jesse Eisenberg was born in Astoria, Queens, New York making him an American citizen. He was raised in New Jersey's East Brunswick. Eisenberg's mother, Amy Eisenberg worked professionally as a clown named Bonabini. The actor's father Barry Eisenberg was a taxicab driver before working in healthcare management and later becoming a professor at SUNY and an author.

Eisenberg, whose family is of Polish ancestry, was raised in a secular Jewish household. His two sisters Hallie Eisenberg and Kerri Eisenberg are also actors. Eisenberg graduated from East Brunswick High School and later went on to become a liberal arts major at New School University, New York.

Earlier this month Polish outlet Głos Wielkopolski published an interview with Jesse Eisenberg where the actor opened up about his upcoming film A Real Pain, which he directed and shot in Poland. When asked about his alleged Polish citizenship, the actor revealed that he had applied for Polish citizenship 9 months ago and was awaiting the final signature. Eisenberg elaborated:

"My family is from the south-east of Poland, from Krasnystaw. My wife's family is from Łódź. We wanted to have a better bond with Poland, and I would like to work here more."

He added:

"The last film I created took place here and I would like to repeat it. I feel a bond with Poland. Growing up, I heard stories about Polish relationships with my Jewish family, and all of those stories were wonderful. We were best friends with Poles."

Eisenberg talked about how A Real Pain is an "almost buddy comedy" movie that sees two American cousins taking a trip to Poland to see where their family is originally from. While filming the movie, Eisenberg filmed in all the locations that his actual family was from.

Jesse Eisenberg agreed that he applied for Polish citizenship because of the film. When working in Poland, the star met people with connections to the government. The actor told these people that he would like to create a better relationship between Jews and Poles and asked them for an option to apply for citizenship.

When asked what he liked most about the country, Jesse Eisenberg talked opened up about how his family had lived there for generations which made him feel connected to something. The actor also noted how everyone in America was new except for the Native Americans who were there first. Jesse Eisenberg stated:

"For me, Poland has made me feel a real connection to something historically larger than myself. The other thing I love is that it is undoubtedly a beautiful country."

When asked if he'd like to move to Poland after gaining citizenship, the actor replied:

"My wife and I would love to live here once in a while. My wife also loves Poland. Her father's family is from Łódź. They fled the war and moved to Siberia, where he was born. I'm sure he has family here that we don't know about but would like to find out."

Jesse Eisenberg's A Real Pain premiered at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival on January 20. Eisenberg wrote, directed, starred in, and produced the film, which also stars Kieran Culkin of Succession fame. A Real Pain is set to hit theaters across the United States on October 18, 2024.
