In Kill Bill Vol. 1, the former assassin Beatrix (code name Black Mamba) tracks down members of her former group, the Deadly Vipers, since they were responsible for almost killing her and leading to the death of her unborn child. She continues her quest for revenge in the film's sequel, Kill Bill Vol. 2, which culminates in the death of the squad's leader Bill, also called the Snake Charmer.
The official synopsis of Kill Bill Vol. 1, as per Rotten Tomatoes, reads:
"A former assassin, known simply as The Bride (Uma Thurman), wakes from a coma four years after her jealous ex-lover Bill (David Carradine) attempts to murder her on her wedding day."
It continues:
"Fueled by an insatiable desire for revenge, she vows to get even with every person who contributed to the loss of her unborn child, her entire wedding party, and four years of her life. After devising a hit list, The Bride sets off on her quest, enduring unspeakable injury and unscrupulous enemies."
Why does Beatrix create a death list in Kill Bill Vol. 1?
Beatrix Kiddo, a former assassin, is attacked by her former squad and leader, Bill, during her wedding rehearsal. Bill kills her fiancé and friends, then shoots Beatrix in the head, unaware she is pregnant with his child.
Beatrix falls into a coma, and Elle Driver attempts to kill her, but Bill stops her, saying it's dishonorable. Four years later, Beatrix wakes up to find she has lost her child. She kills a man who tries to assault her, along with Buck, a hospital worker who allowed others to harm her while she was unconscious.
After leaving the hospital, the vengeful Beatrix creates a Death List Five and sets off on her mission to kill Bill and his Deadly Vipers one by one.
How does Beatrix kill Vernita Green and O-Ren Ishii in Kill Bill Vol. 1?
Her first target is Vernita Green, a former Deadly Viper, who left her life of crime behind to lead a normal suburban life with her husband and daughter. The two women come to blows in her living room before they are interrupted by Vernita's daughter, Nikkia Bell. After ensuring the young child is out of earshot, they head to the kitchen where Beatrix stabs Vernita in the chest, instantly killing her.
Beatrix checks off the first name on her list and moves on to her next target, O-Ren Ishii, a skilled assassin who leads the Tokyo yakuza. The film shows O-Ren's tragic past, explaining how she became a deadly assassin by 20. Beatrix travels to Okinawa to persuade swordsmith Hattori Hanzō to make her a katana. In Tokyo, she confronts O-Ren at the House of Blue Leaves, where she defeats O-Ren’s army, the Crazy 88, and her bodyguard, Gogo Yubari.
In the climax of Kill Bill Vol. 1, the severely bruised Beatrix faces off against O-Ren in the snowy garden outside the club. Armed with their respective blades, they embark on a deadly fight, with Beatrix using every ounce of her strength to overpower O-Ren. In the end, she successfully slays her nemesis by slashing the top of her skull.
Furthermore, she gets information on the other Deadly Vipers from O-Ren's assistant, Sofie Fatale. In the closing moments of Kill Bill Vol. 1, Bill finds out about Beatrix and asks Sofie if she is aware that her daughter is alive.
