Luther: Never Too Much is a documentary chronicling the life and legacy of legendary R&B artist Luther Vandross. Directed by Dawn Porter, the film will premiere on New Year’s Day 2025 on CNN. It will also be available for streaming on Max and OWN later in the year.

The movie shows how Luther Vandross went from being underprivileged in Harlem to becoming one of the most famous artists of all time. Rare archive footage and interviews with close friends like Mariah Carey and Dionne Warwick are used in the documentary to honor his career turning points, personal hardships, and struggles to gain general respect and understanding.

Produced by a team including Jamie Foxx and Dawn Porter, Luther: Never Too Much stands as a tribute to Vandross’ genius. Fans can also get to enjoy Vandross’ previously unreleased version of the Beatles’ Michelle, included in the upcoming compilation album, Never Too Much: Greatest Hits, released on December 13, 2024.

Production and direction

The documentary is directed by Dawn Porter, known for acclaimed projects like John Lewis: Good Trouble. Jamie Foxx serves as an executive producer alongside Datari Turner, Jon Platt, and others. The film is a collaborative effort by Raindog Films, Foxxhole Productions, and Trilogy Films, with the distribution managed by Sony Music Vision.

The production team worked closely with Vandross’ estate to acquire rights and access rare footage. The music is scored and composed by the Grammy-winning Robert Glasper.

Luther Vandross, a pioneering R&B artist, was born in Harlem, New York, on April 20, 1951. He was renowned for his timeless music and soulful voice. Throughout his career, he won eight Grammy Awards, including Song of the Year for Dance with My Father, and sold over 40 million records worldwide.

Vandross began his career as a highly sought-after backing vocalist for legendary artists such as David Bowie and Chaka Khan. In 1981, the release of Never Too Much marked the beginning of his solo career, solidifying his status as an R&B legend. Any Love and Endless Love are among the numerous hits in his extensive discography.

Vandross' legacy endures to this day, as he passed away in 2005. His contributions to music have been commemorated posthumously, as evidenced by his induction into the National Rhythm & Blues Hall of Fame in 2021.
