Recently, The Batman - Part 2 was delayed from October 2, 2026, to October 1, 2027. This left fans of the upcoming film quite upset, as this means that they will have to wait a year longer for the highly anticipated sequel, which was already coming many years after the release of the first film. However, director Matt Reeves recently provided a positive update on it.
Talking about The Batman - Part 2 at the Golden Globes with Deadline on January 6, 2025, Reeves did confirm the fact that the upcoming DC film starring Robert Pattinson will be shooting this year. While he didn't provide many details about the story, Reeves did tease where the plot may go.
"I can tell you that we're going to be shooting this year and that we're excited about it. I can't really tell you anything about it except that we're really excited. We're continuing the story...I'm really excited to be making it, to get our cast back together, to get new people involved, and we're really excited about it," shared Reeves.
Reeves also hopes that fans will be surprised by the story for the upcoming film.
"What I'm excited about is I feel like we're doing something that absolutely continues where the story came from but is something that I hope people are going to be really surprised by," said Reeves.
He later confirmed that The Batman - Part 2 was delayed as he is still finishing up the script for the film. This was also confirmed by DC Studios' co-president James Gunn back in December on Threads when he shared that he wants to give Matt Reeves as much time as he can to finish the script for the film.
“The only reason for the delay is there isn’t a full script (those of you who follow me here probably know that already). Matt is committed to making the best film he possibly can, and no one can accurately guess exactly how long a script will take to write. Once there is a finished script, there is around two years for pre-production, shooting and post-production on big films," said Gunn.
Fans will be able to check out The Batman - Part 2 when it premieres on October 1, 2027.
What can fans expect from The Batman - Part 2?
Earlier in September, 2025, Matt Reeves spoke about the shape that The Batman - Part 2's story will be taking. Talking to SFX Magazine, Reeves confirmed that the film will be diving deep into the corruption of Gotham, with there being more mystery to the plot.
"It's another mystery in The Batman 2 that's going to dig into the epic story about deeper corruption, and it goes into places that he couldn't even anticipate in the first one. The seeds of where this goes are all in the first movie, and it expands in a way that will show you aspects of the character you never got to see. Batman is constantly battling these forces. But those forces can't be entirely exorcised. So the next movie delves deeper into that," said Reeves.
Colin Farrell's Penguin is confirmed to appear in the film as well after receiving his own series in 2024. For further updates on the movie, stay tuned with us.
