Megan is Missing is a 2011 psychological horror film that follows the found footage format. Very controversial during its release, it subsequently gained a cult following in 2020 when its clips were shared by users on TikTok, which primarily serves a younger demographic.
The film serves as a cautionary tale on online safety, and how vulnerable teenagers can be manipulated to horrific ends. In the ending, it is revealed that Megan is kidnapped by a serial killer and s*xual predator going by the name of Josh.
After he abducts Megan, he begins stalking and taunting her surviving friend, Amy. And he eventually kidnaps her too, while she's filming a video at one of the places she and Megan used to hang out.
Amy then witnesses the full horror of what Josh has done, as he abducts, tortures, and rapes teenagers to produce BDSM snuff content to share on sketchy fetish forums.
After Josh tortures, degrades, and rapes Amy, he offers to set her free if she gets into a plastic barrel so she won't know where he's taking her. He turns out to be lying, as the barrel actually contains Megan's decaying corpse, and Josh simply wants to bury Amy alive with her.
Megan is Missing explores the dysfunctions of teenage life
Megan is Missing follows the dysfunctional lives of two teenage girls, Megan and Amy. Megan is a popular honors student who has a dysfunctional relationship with her mother, while Amy is a target of school bullying, and has a love for stuffed toys.
Megan invites Amy to a rave party to help her fit in more, but Amy has a terrible experience there, from being sexually harassed to walking in on Megan having oral sex with the party's host in exchange for drugs.
Megan apologizes to Amy in the aftermath of this, as she's figured out Amy had a bad experience.
Later, on Amy's birthday, she and Megan record a video diary together, where Megan reveals that she was molested by her stepfather when she was nine, and her mother has been bitter towards her because she went to the police with this.
Megan is subsequently introduced to Josh through her mutual friend, Lexi. Josh never shows his face in video chat, claiming his webcam is broken, but winds Megan over with his charms.
Red flags abound in Josh's behavior, which leads to him inviting Megan to a party but failing to show up. Josh says he's too bashful to approach her directly and that he can only look at her admiringly. Later, Megan makes sure Amy doesn't feel left out by introducing her to Josh as well.
Megan accepts Josh's invitation to meet him in a private spot behind a diner, and as soon as she accepts the bait, she is kidnapped. Josh instantly senses Amy's suspicions and follows up, but he notices this and tells her to back off.
Pictures of Megan being tortured eventually surface on sketchy online forums, making it clear she's going through something horrible. However, Amy fails to mount any rescue effort as Josh eventually abducts her as well, leading to the horrific events of Megan is Missing's ending.
Megan is Missing was a controversial and divisive release, with fans and critics split on whether the story served as an effective cautionary tale against trusting online strangers, or whether Megan is Missing was simply exploiting a sensitive subject for shock value.
