The first teaser trailer for Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning was released by Paramount on November 11, 2024. The film is the latest installment in the long-running Mission: Impossible series and the direct sequel to 2023's Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning. Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning is set to release on May 23, 2025.

The film series premiered in 1996 as a spin-off of the original 1966 espionage-themed television series created by Bruce Geller. The film series introduced Ethan Hunt, played by Tom Cruise, who's the point-man for the covert Impossible Missions Force.

After Ethan exposed the villainy of the original IMF leader Jim Phelps in the first film, he has been the leader of the IMF in all subsequent films. The plot of Dead Reckoning focuses on the Entity, a malevolent artificial intelligence that has garnered acolytes determined to ensure that it rises as the ruler of a new world order.

By the end of Dead Reckoning, Ethan had outsmarted The Entity's enforcer, an old nemesis named Gabriel, and discovered that the Entity might be located in a submarine in Sevastopol. Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning will pick up where Dead Reckoning had left off and feature the final battle between Ethan Hunt and the Entity.

Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning will pick up where Dead Reckoning left off and conclude the battle between the IMF and the Entity. Dead Reckoning established the Entity as a fast-growing AI that had created its own cult of personality.

Acolytes like Ethan's old nemesis, Gabriel, considered the Entity the rightful ruler of a new world, while Ethan and the IMF spent most of the previous film trying to thwart Gabriel's plans and prevent the Entity's rise to power.

The film revolved around the chase for a key that could grant control of the Entity's systems, and Ethan chased down a thief named Grace who had one of the pieces of the key.

Dead Reckoning also featured the final appearance of Ethan's fair-weather ally Ilsa Faust, who lost her life in a fight against Gabriel, while Ethan was distracted by the Entity. However, Ethan turned the tables on Gabriel after he had betrayed his own underling, Paris, leaving her to die.

Ethan and Gabriel had a climactic showdown on a train, where Ethan was apparently outmatched. However, he later revealed to Grace that he had actually outwitted Gabriel and stolen his piece of the Entity's key. Ethan then spoke to a dying Paris, who revealed the location of the Entity to Ethan - a submarine located in Sevastopol.

In Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning, Ethan Hunt will remark on a journey to the submarine to unearth the Entity and eliminate the threat it poses. However, while outwitted, Gabriel is very much alive and is poised to throw a spanner in Ethan's plans.

That's not even getting into the numerous other acolytes and pawns the Entity would have in store. Dead Reckoning established that the AI is chillingly good at infiltration and deception and may very well use the power-hungry tendencies of governments around the world against them in its bid for power.

Whichever way the conflict plays out, Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning promises to be a spectacular man vs machine showdown. The film will release in theatres on May 23, 2025.
