Taken, The Vanishing, and other movies like Last Seen Alive
1) Prisoners (Amazon Prime Video)
Hugh Jackman and Jake Gyllenhaal's Prisoners is a kidnapping thriller full of emotions. The movie is set in Pennsylvania, where Keller Dover's (Hugh Jackman) daughter and her friend went missing. Frustrated by the reluctance of the police, Keller Dover starts his journey of finding his missing daughter and friend but somehow puts himself at stake.
Meanwhile, Jake Gyllenhaal, playing the role of Detective Loki, is on his quest to solve the case. However, he is troubled by the constant pressure of his parents and his struggles. The rich subplots and groundbreaking performances by the suspects and the lead actors make it a great watch, quite similar to Last Seen Alive.
2) Taken (Netflix)
Liam Nesson's Taken is a kidnapping thriller about a father going to any length to find his daughter. Liam Nesson, heading the film as Bryan Mills, is a retired CIA agent who sets on a journey across the entire Europe to find his lost daughter Kim. Pierre Morel's Taken explores the themes of father-daughter bond, human trafficking and old sins biting you back in a no-nonsense way, filled with world-class action sequences.
Although the film stars an old Liam in his fifties, the action sequences, the punches, and the kicks feel as young and intense as they can be. The film is tightly paced in 90 minutes and doesn't deviate a single moment. Moreover, the performances by the entire cast are like a cherry on top. Like in Last Seen Alive, the chase and action sequences are engaging.
3) The Vanishing (Apple TV)
The Vanishing is a 1988 psychological thriller adapted from the novel The Golden Egg. The film is about a man on a three-year journey to find his missing girlfriend who goes missing during a vacation. After three years of Johanna ter Steege as Saskia's disappearance, Rex (Gene Bervoets) starts receiving strange letters from the kidnapper.
This film is slightly different from Last Seen Alive. However, the protagonist's intent to go to any lengths to get back the lost person and the tortures of kidnapping are quite similar to Last Seen Alive. This film is powerful because of the brilliant performances of the lead, especially of the antagonist, and will leave an impact on viewers.
4) You Were Never Really Here (Amazon Prime Video)
In a different kind of Joaquin Phoenix movie, a veteran is set on a mission to find missing girls for a living. He is traumatized by his past and tries to find peace through his constant mission. However, he is soon trapped in a conspiracy and is being hunted.
This film is deeply layered, exploring the tragedies and inner conflicts of the lead characters. The action sequences in this film are very well-staged and are bound to give viewers thrills like Last Seen Alive. Furthermore, it is packed with a brilliant performance of Joaquin Phoenix, just like Gerald Butler in Last Seen Alive.
5) Man on Fire (Amazon Prime Video)
Tony Scott's Man on Fire, starring Denzel Washington as John Creasy, is about an assassin in Mexico who is hired as a bodyguard for a family. However, he still agrees to take the role and promises to take revenge on the kidnapper of the child for the family he is hired as a bodyguard.
Even after his noble intentions and finally trying to get over his alcoholism, John becomes a suspect in the eyes of the police regarding Pita's abduction. What sets this movie apart is how Denzel's character is given ample screen time with Pita to form a bond, which is why the vengeance feels more personal and engaging. Like Last Seen Alive, the good old-fashioned action and revenge sequences against the criminals are very well-written in this film.
6. Oldboy (Netflix)
Park Chan Wook's Oldboy is an unconventional kidnapping thriller. The film explores the life of Dae-su Oh, who was kidnapped and imprisoned and was finally set free after 15 years. He then sets on a mission to find his abductors. However, the film explores many layers of Dae-su Oh's character.
Before he became a prisoner in a privately run prison, he was suspected of killing his wife. Oldboy heavily relies on surrealism and is the kind of film that requires viewers to disbelieve some preset notions. The film's bleak, dark setting constantly surprises viewers with many plot twists. Much like Last Seen Alive, the action scenes are well-choreographed and engaging.
