Lonely Planet is a Netflix original film directed by Susannah Grant and released in October 2024. The film stars Laura Dern and Liam Hemsworth and is a romantic drama that covers the journey of a reclusive author to Morocco. After arriving there, against her expectations, she finds herself starring in her own love story.

Romantic and dramatic stories in exotic locales, like Lonely Planet, are nothing new in the world of film. Similar to Lonely Planet, plenty of Hollywood flicks have covered love stories and/or people finding themselves after traveling to distant lands.

This Netflix original film was released on July 19, 2024, and was written and directed by Stelana Kliris. The film stars Harry Connick Jr., Agni Scott, and Ali Fumiko Whitney. Like in Lonely Planet, the film follows a character's journey of self-discovery after he moves to foreign shores.

The story follows a rock musician whose career is facing a decline. He moves to Cyprus and buys a flat there, only to discover that the place where he lives is a s*icide hotspot. During his stay, he reconnects with an old flame, Sia, and Melina, a daughter he never knew he had.


2) Jerry Maguire

This 1996 film was directed by Cameron Crowe and stars Tom Cruise, Renee Zellweger, and Cuba Gooding Jr. The film follows the story of a sports agent named Jerry Maguire, who starts out enjoying the good life with a high-ranking position and prestige.

Things take a turn when he discovers the corruption underlying the sports management business after a client suffers a concussion. This discovery prompts Jerry to sacrifice his professional and personal standing to pursue something he can truly believe in. His journey of self-discovery also puts him on the path of finding someone who will love him for who he truly is and not for his status.

This 2004 film is a romantic drama starring Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams based on a novel of the same name by Nicholas Sparks. It follows the story of two lovebirds, Noah and Allie, and their summer romance. Netflix's Lonely Planet was also heavily focused on a summer romance plot.

The Notebook is framed as a story an elderly man named Duke narrates to an Alzheimer's patient at a nursing home. It is eventually revealed that the patient is none other than Allie, and Duke is Noah, who uses a pseudonym so he doesn't startle her. Noah does his best to comfort Allie while reminding her of their shared times.

A little different from other movies in the list, The Tourist is a 2010 remake of the 2005 French thriller Anthony Zimmer. The film stars Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie and focuses on the hunt for a master thief, known only as Alexander Pearce - wanted by rival gangs and Scotland Yard.

In Venice, Italy, Elise receives a note from Alexander asking her to find a man resembling his height and build on a train. Thanks to his machinations, Elise befriends a tourist and teacher known as Frank Tupelo and drags him into a cat-and-mouse game that puts both of their lives on the line.

The Tourist is a romantic thriller that, like Lonely Planet, explores the exotic locales but that of Venice. The movie also focuses on the budding romance between Elise and Frank Tupelo.

Directed by Cameron Crowe, Aloha is a military-themed romantic comedy starring Bradley Cooper and Emma Stone. The film focuses on military contractor Brian Gilcrest, who arrives in Hawaii on a work assignment.

There, he partners up with Captain Allison Ng. Her influence slowly makes him shed the cynicism he's developed, and he soon becomes more in tune with Hawaii's culture. Eventually, Gilcrest must decide what's more important to him, his career or relationships.
