My Old Ass is a comedy-drama science fiction film directed and written by Megan Park. It stars Aubrey Plaza, Maisy Stella, and Percy Hynes White in lead roles. The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival on January 20, 2024, and had a limited theatrical release in the United States on September 13, 2024.

Among the film's producers are Margot Robbie, Tom Ackerley, Josey McNamara, and Steven Rales. Moreover, My Old Ass is executive produced by Daniel Bekerman, Bronte Payne, and Megan Park. The film's official synopsis, as per Rotten Tomatoes, reads:

"In this fresh coming-of-age story, an 18th birthday mushroom trip brings free-spirited Elliott (Maisy Stella) face-to-face with her wisecracking 39-year-old self (Aubrey Plaza)."

The synopsis continues:

"But when Elliott's "old ass" starts handing out warnings about what her younger self should and shouldn't do, Elliott realizes she has to rethink everything about family, love, and what's becoming a transformative summer."

Megan Park described the process of adding One Less Lonely Girl to the film's soundtrack in an interview with Marie Claire in September 2024:

"One Less Lonely Girl was not in the first script. It had a different song for that moment that didn't get cleared because of the drug element of it. I actually went to Maisy and I was like, 'What is an iconic moment or concert from your childhood?' And it was within the same breath. She was like, 'Justin Bieber, One Less Lonely Girl.'"

She continued:

"And then we watched the Never Say Never movie together and ....I had the idea of, ‘What if you are Justin, and Chad becomes the one less lonely girl.’ At this point, we had Kerrice [Brooks] and Maddie [Ziegler] who are professional background dancers, so I was like, we have to take advantage of this. Maisie can sing."

Plot summary

My Old Ass tells the story of the 18-year-old Elliott, who comes in contact with her 39-year-old future self after tripping on mushrooms one night. She is soon to leave for college at the University of Toronto and gets help from the older Elliott in navigating situations with her family and friends.

While sharing her words of wisdom, the older Elliott warns her to stay away from a guy named Chad. However, the teenager soon runs into Chad and despite her best efforts, falls in love with him. The film's climax reveals that the two go on to have a long and happy relationship in college, and much longer after that.

The older Elliott shares that Chad will pass away sometime in the future, leaving her heartbroken and hence, she traveled back in time to save her teenage self from the pain.

In the end, the younger Elliott decides to love Chad despite his fate and live her life in the present, come what may.
