As per an article by The New York Times published in June 2021, Carry-On was announced as the first project between Netflix and Amblin Partners, Steven Spielberg’s production company, after they signed a deal to produce multiple films annually.

The movie went into production on October 18, 2022, and wrapped up filming on December 16, 2022. It was shot in the city of New Orleans, Louisiana, and Cleveland, Ohio.

The film's lead star, Taron Egerton, said in an interview with Entertainment Weekly in October 2024 that his character was "a hero in waiting." He further described his character as follows:

“He’s unhappy at work at the airport and feeling flat and dejected about it. He’s also just found out his girlfriend is pregnant. So he feels pressure to be a responsible father and provider, but I think he also feels a deep lack of fulfillment. So when he’s put in this terrible situation, he has a huge occasion to rise to.”
