Lolo and the Kid is the latest addition to Netflix's stellar addition of foreign films in 2024. The Philipino film directed by Benedict Mique is an emotional drama that centers around the relationship between an elderly man called Lolo, and a young boy he took in, called the Kid.
Lolo and the Kid are not a normal grandpa-grandson duo. They are con artists who steal people's money using their sympathy. They go into rich neighborhoods and pretend to be living on the streets, waiting for wealthy and compassionate people to let them in and conning them of valuables.
However, the emotional film becomes a tear-jerker when Lolo decides to give up the Kid to a nice couple who could provide him with a good life. Lolo and the Kid stars Joel Torre and Euwenn Mikael Aleta in the lead roles.
Lolo gives up the Kid to a couple for adoption
Lolo and the Kid opens up with a wealthy couple coming out of their car with their shopping bags and talking about house decoration. They see Lolo and the Kid sleeping on the footpath, right in front of their gate. After some time, they give them some food and invite them into their house.
The grandpa-grandson duo shows immense respect and pristine behavior. The couple then reveals to Lolo that they want to adopt the Kid, as they don't have a child and aren't able to conceive one. Lolo reluctantly accepts and leaves the Kid with them.
However, later at night, the Kid runs out of the couple's house with some expensive valuables, and it's revealed that the duo are con artists and have been doing this for a long time.
They see the valuables and use the money for living. Throughout the film, they play the same trick with multiple people, but we can see that Lolo feels guilty about making the Kid indulge in such activity.
Finally, when the Kid was coming out after stealing from a nice couple who wanted to adopt him, Lolo refused to take the Kid with him, telling him that one day he would understand why his Grandpa left him. The Kid, after getting abandoned, gets depressed and even unsuccessfully runs away from home to seek Lolo.
The film jumps over a decade and we see the Kid as a young man, who has recently graduated and is happy with his foster parents.
Lolo and the Kid are reunited after a decade
The Kid gets a call from the hospital where he finds Lolo, aged, sick and unable to speak. Seeing each other after a decade overwhelms them with unexplored emotions. The Kid takes Lolo, who is now in a wheelchair, to all the places where they used to go together.
The first place is the shop where they used to sell the stolen items. The shopkeeper, called Fatty by the Kid, is shocked to see the old man, unable to hide his emotions. Lolo sells him a camera for a thousand bucks.
After that, Lolo asks the Kid to take him to a karaoke place, where they used to spend a lot of time together, singing and drinking. The Kid starts singing a song and asks Lolo to join him but finds his beloved grandpa unresponsive. Lolo dies doing what he loved the most - spending time with the Kid.
The Kid finds pictures of him in Lolo's bag
The Kid is devastated after losing his grandpa once again. He finds some pictures in Lolo's bag, and it's revealed that Lolo had pictures of all the important moments of the Kid's life, his first school day, graduation ceremony, etc.
The kid breaks down finding that his grandpa had never abandoned him. Lolo had found the Kid on the street one night as an abandoned baby and took care of him till his last breath. He gave him up for adoption for a better life but never left him alone. The film ends with this bittersweet moment.
Lolo and the Kid is available on Netflix for streaming.
