Looking into Jenna Ortega's upcoming movie in 2025
Death of a Unicorn follows Elliot, played by Paul Rudd, and his teenage daughter Ridley, played by Jenna Ortega, on a bizarre and life-changing journey. The story begins with the two heading to a crisis management summit hosted by Elliot’s billionaire boss, Dell Leopold, played by Richard E. Grant.
While driving late at night on a remote road, their car accidentally hits and kills a unicorn—a creature they initially struggle to believe is real. Shocked and unsure of what to do, they bring the body to the summit, where things take an unexpected turn.
Leopold and his team of scientists discover that the unicorn’s blood and horn shavings possess incredible healing properties. Viewing it as an opportunity to revolutionize the pharmaceutical world, the Leopolds exploit the unicorn’s remains for profit. As experiments progress, they uncover dangerous and horrifying consequences of tampering with the magical creature.
Things escalate when they realize the unicorn isn’t alone—its mother, a much larger and far more terrifying creature, arrives seeking revenge. The film mixes dark humor, horror, and commentary on greed as Elliot and Ridley are caught in the chaos, fighting to survive the wrath of the unicorn’s vengeful family.

The film, directed and written by Alex Scharfman, marks his debut as a feature director, building on his experience producing indie titles like Blow the Man Down and Resurrection.
The production received approval to continue shooting during the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike, as A24 operates independently of the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) and agreed to union terms.
Producers for the project include Ari Aster, known for Midsommar and Beau Is Afraid, and Lucas Joaquin, under their companies Square Peg and Secret Engine, respectively.
The cast was confirmed after filming began, with Paul Rudd and Jenna Ortega leading as a father-daughter duo. Supporting cast members include Richard E. Grant, Téa Leoni, Will Poulter, Anthony Carrigan, Sunita Mani, Jessica Hynes, and Stephen Park.
The creative team behind the film is packed with talent. Larry Fong, the cinematographer behind Kong: Skull Island, handled the visuals, while Andrea Flesch, who worked on Midsommar, designed the costumes.
Amy Williams, known for Master of None, oversaw production design, ensuring the film’s world complemented its dark comedy tone.
John Carpenter, alongside his son Cody and Daniel Davies, composed the score, adding a layer of horror ambiance. Post-production wrapped in late 2024, with A24 set to distribute globally, promising another standout addition to its catalog of boundary-pushing films.
