The production of Death of a Unicorn, an A24-backed film, began in July 2023, with Budapest, Hungary, serving as the principal filming location. The film, directed and written by Alex Scharfman, marks his debut as a feature director, building on his experience producing indie titles like Blow the Man Down and Resurrection.

The production received approval to continue shooting during the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike, as A24 operates independently of the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) and agreed to union terms.

Producers for the project include Ari Aster, known for Midsommar and Beau Is Afraid, and Lucas Joaquin, under their companies Square Peg and Secret Engine, respectively.
