A24 will soon jump back into the world of horror with its upcoming movie Heretic, which, by the looks of it, feels like a great entry into the genre.
The first trailer for the movie was dropped on June 25, giving a glimpse at the grim world of Mormon missionaries created by Scott Beck and Bryan Woods, the breakout writers in John Krasinski's A Quiet Place, one of the most acclaimed horror movies of the past few years.
The stylish trailer gives a glimpse at a sufficiently creepy Hugh Grant who puts two missionaries on a series of dangerous tasks when they approach him to talk about god and religion. The trailer also seems to ooze with style and substance as it creates an exceptionally chilly atmosphere where Grant's character torments the two women.
Heretic is set to release theatrically on November 15, 2024.
Heretic trailer raises big questions about faith with "belief" and "disbelief"
The haunting trailer for A24's Heretic opens with two missionaries, played by Chloe East and Sophie Thatcher, going door to door to spread the word of the Lord. However, by a stroke of bad luck or through fate, the duo end up on the doorsteps of Hugh Grant, whose character seems to be a warm host at first.
He soon takes them to a room with two doors, one labeled "belief" and the other labeled "disbelief." He forces them to choose to leave the house. The trailer quickly jumps to the psychological and physical tests that the two young women have to go through.
The atmosphere is teased as extremely scary, and there seems to be an aura of the supernatural all around as well. The trailer also ends rather ambiguously, following in the footsteps of great horrors. Yesterday, Robert Eggers' Nosferatu also dropped the first trailer and followed a similar format.
Who is behind Heretic?
Heretic comes from the directors Scott Beck and Bryan Woods, who also wrote the movie. The duo broke through with the script for A Quiet Place, which became a huge success in the genre, spawning more sequels and spinoffs. Beck and Woods continued to co-write and direct the 2019 crime horror Haunt.
They next collaborated on Adam Driver-starrer 65, a sci-fi thriller that opened to mixed reviews. They also wrote the script for The Boogeyman.
The cast of the movie includes Hugh Grant, Sophie Thatcher, and Chloe East in the leading roles, alongside Elle McKinnon, River Codack, Carolyn Adair, Stephanie Lavigne, and Elle Young. More cast members are yet to be announced.
Becks and Woods are also going to co-produce the movie, alongside Katie Aquino, Scott Beck, Liliane Bedford, Julia Glausi, Kai Raka, Stacey Sher, and Jeanette Volturno.
Heretic will premiere on November 14, 2024, in theaters. Stay tuned for more updates.
