"Accident got to me"— Keanu Reeves recounts breaking his kneecap while filming Good Fortune

In January 2024, images of Keanu Reeves walking with crutches, with his left knee bandaged in an ice pack, made the rounds online. Reeves broke his kneecap while filming for the upcoming American comedy drama Good Fortune directed by Aziz Ansari.

During an appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Keanu Reeves recounted how he broke his knee on the sets of Good Fortune. When Stephen asked about the incident asking, "What happened? Who got to you?" Keanu Reeves responded:

"No one got to me. Accident got to me."

When Stephen further questioned if he was jumping from building to building, or cartwheeling past razor blades, Keanu added:

"No, Stephen, I was walking into the dressing room, a room. I will tell it quick."

Keanu revealed that while shooting a scene with Aziz Ansari and Seth Rogen where the actors were doing a cold plunge, Keanu started doing the cold shuffle in a room with protective carpets. Keanu then demonstrated how his foot got caught while he was shuffling.

While recalling his accident where he injured himself on the sets of Good Fortune, Keanu mentioned that his kneecap cracked:

"My patella, kneecap, cracked like a potato chip. But I didn't know that. But then once my knee was blowing up. Comedy is hard man."

He also clarified that he got injured during a comedy scene and not in an action scene.

In April 2024, the film's director, Aziz Ansari at CinemaCon in Las Vegas, explained the incident and said the actor got injured 15 days after shooting with him. Ansari also mentioned he asked Keanu to "go chill" in the dressing room for 15 minutes but he tripped on a rug instead.

Ansari also praised Reeves for bouncing back and recovering from his kneecap injury:

"Poor guy, he was such a trooper, and he fractured his kneecap and continued to do all the scenes."

Director Ansari also called Reeves "an angel." Despite his injury, Reeves still managed to film everything except some salsa dancing scenes, as per Ansari. Although Keanu volunteered to do it, Ansari said he asked Keanu to "calm down" and come back to the scene once his knee had healed.

This isn't the first time Reeves has gotten injured on set. In April 2023, during an appearance on the The Art of Action podcast, Keanu mentioned he kept his spinal injury a secret to star in the Matrix (1999).

The actor had to do a two-level fusion on his spine and have a plate placed in his neck as a result of the demanding fight scenes in the movie.
