Alien: Romulus, the seventh film of one of the most popular film franchises in cinema history, has managed to pull in enough crowd to make it the second-highest opener of the Alien franchise. This is remarkable considering the first film, Alien, directed by Ridley Scott, was released in 1979.
Even after 45 years, the concept of a group of space travellers getting attacked by a creepy and powerful alien who kills them in the most gruesome and horrific manner is still a winner at the box office. The original film and its sequel, Aliens, directed by another legend, James Cameron, is considered a masterpiece in horror and use of practical effects.
The film, directed by Fede Alvarez, was released on August 16, 2024. It stars Cailee Spaeny, David Jonsson, Archie Renaux, Isabela Merced, Spike Fearn, and Aileen Wu.
Alien: Romulus is only behind Prometheus in the first-weekend collection
The film Alien: Romulus debuted with around $41.5 million at the domestic box office, making it the second-highest opener for the franchise. It is only behind Prometheus (2012), which made $51 million on its debut. The film also brought $66 million from the international market for a stellar worldwide collection of $108 million.
The franchise's last film, Alien: Covenant (2017), only managed to bring $36 million, even less than Alien vs Predator's (2004) $38.3 million. Alien: Romulus is made with a budget of $80 million and is getting positive responses from critics and viewers.
The film is set 20 years after the events of Alien and follows a similar template to the original. A group of young space colonists getting attacked by the face-huggers and Xenomorph, showing their horror, anxiety, and resilience in the face of death. The box office numbers are a testament to the original concept's brilliance and Fede Alvarez's mastery over suspense and horror.
Alien: Romulus managed to end Deadpool & Wolverine's reign at the box office
Deadpool & Wolverine's dominance at the box office is over after three weeks. The superhero juggernaut slipped into second place with $29 million on its fourth weekend. The film has collected over $1.14 billion at the global box office, becoming the most successful R-rated film ever.
Sony's adaptation of Colleen Hoover's novel It Ends With Us continued its successful run with $24 million in the second weekend. The film has already made around $180 million against a $25 million budget, making it one of the year's biggest success stories.
Other success stories include Daisy Edgar-Jones and Glen Powell-led disaster film Twisters, which has grossed $238.4 million in North America and collected $9.8 million in the fourth weekend.
The year has been good for the box office, as films like Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, Deadpool & Wolverine, Inside Out 2, Despicable Me 4, Dune: Part 2, Bad Boys: Ride or Die, etc, did remarkable business. The dent created during the pandemic is slowly getting repaired, and Alien: Romulus is here to help.
Alien: Romulus is currently playing in the theatres.
