Sydney Sweeney shares some strong opinions about "women empowering other women" in Hollywood, which she thinks is just a facade. In her feature for Vanity Fair's 2025 Hollywood Issue, published on Wednesday, November 13, the actress said:
"This entire industry, all people say is "Women empowering other women." None of it is happening. All of it is fake and front for all the other sh*t that they say behind everyone's back."
The Anyone But You star previously fell victim to the false women's empowerment narrative when she had to defend herself against veteran producer Carol Baum, who disparaged her acting ability. Baum previously said that she's "not pretty" and "can't act" and that her hit rom-com with Glen Powell, Anyone But You, is "unwatchable."
Her team fired back at Baum in April 2024, saying that it was "sad" and "shameful" to have a woman in a position to attack another woman and a fellow female producer. Sydney Sweeney echoed the same sadness in her latest Vanity Fair feature, saying:
"It's very disheartening to see women tear other women down, especially when women who are successful in other avenues of their industry see younger talent working really hard—hoping to achieve whatever dreams they may have—and then trying to bash and discredit any work they've done."
As for women tearing other women down, the Euphoria star thinks there are various reasons why women feel like "they have to fight each other" instead of lifting each other up. As for herself, she admitted that she's "still trying to figure it out," but she doesn't get why she's being attacked, saying:
"I'm just trying my best over here. Why am I getting attacked?"
Sydney Sweeney looked back on making Anyone But You amid its criticism
Speaking of her hit movie Anyone But You, which Carol Baum said was "unwatchable," Sydney Sweeney said that fans have the Euphoria season 3 delay to thank for the movie. In her latest Vanity Fair interview, the actress revealed that she passed on a few projects, thinking that filming for Euphoria would resume. But citing the delays, she said:
"That's how Anyone But You happened. Euphoria was supposed to start filming, and I had another film that I was supposed to do, but we couldn't get cleared and after a few weeks, I realized, 'This is not happening.' So I put in full gear to make Anyone But You."
Sweeney also said she would "absolutely love" to work with her Anyone But You costar Glen Powell on another project. She also mentioned how they are supportive of each other and their respective careers, adding that they "call each other up and ask for advice."
As for Euphoria, which is slated to resume production in January 2025, Sydney Sweeney has some fond things to say about her character Cassie. She said that her character in the series is "deep and meaningful" for her, adding:
"Cassie is the longest character I've ever had in my life. I feel like she'll always have such a special place in my heart."
That special place is the reason why Sydney Sweeney said that she knows she will be able to "just jump right in" when it comes to reprising her role.
Sydney Sweeney is set to star opposite Julianne Moore in the American thriller movie Echo Valley, which is expected to be released in 2025.
