Actor Jennifer Lawrence has announced her support for Kamla Harris in the 2024 presidential election. In an interview with People on Tuesday, September 24, 2024, the Hunger Games actress discussed her reasoning, stating, "Abortion is literally on the ballot." She continued:
"I'm voting for Kamala Harris because I think she's an amazing candidate and I know that she will do whatever she can to protect reproductive rights."
As news of the actress endorsing Kamala Harris spread, internet users were quick to react. One referenced her dystopian film franchise, stating:
"Apparently she wants the hunger games to continue."
Many commended Lawrence for her stance, stating she was on the right side of history.
"As the lead actress in a dystopian film franchise, she’s pretty familiar with the result of a fascist dictatorship in power," one user wrote.
"Jennifer is an example of a ww raised in a conservative/GOP family/state. Through common sense and life experience she understands the difference between the parties," @ThinkAbtThingz added.
"jennifer lawrence has yet to let me down. sis is always on the right side of history and all things bravo-related. also, katniss everdeen wouldn’t have missed trump. i’m just saying she knew how to hit her target," a fan commented.
However, not everyone was happy with her move, with many criticizing her for being clueless about what middle-class citizens go through.
"Rich millennial white women who have no idea what it’s like to be a middle class human at it again," another remarked.
"Jennifer Lawrence has fallen--AGAIN--and she can't get up," @LowCountryBK369 commented.
Jennifer Lawrence is producing two political films, Bread and Roses and Zurawski v Texas
Jennifer Lawrence made her feminist stance clear in an interview with People, stating that she produced two films reflecting her political values ahead of the November elections. The first, Bread and Roses (2023) by director Sarah Mani, documents the lives of three Afghani women under Taliban rule. The second, Zurawski v Texas (2024), is about abortion care workers who sued the state of Texas in 2023.
Lawrence told the publication:
"As online trolls like to point out every time I get involved in politics, I didn't go to school, I dropped out of middle school, so I don't have a classic education. So storytelling is where I get most of my education."
The actress founded her film and television production company, Excellent Cadaver, in 2018. Lawrence explained that the beauty of documentary films lies in "educating others through storytelling." She elaborated that it is easy to forget things by just hearing facts or listening to the news. She added that until people "actually see human existence" and realize "what's going on," their minds won't be changed.
Jennifer Lawrence told People that she and her fellow Excellent Cadaver producer Justine Ciarrocchi did not originally intend to get into documentary films. However, she explained that it was fitting to produce the films as Americans geared up for the 2024 elections. She hoped that the movies inspire audiences to rightly exercise their duties by "voting."
This is not the first time Jennifer Lawrence has been vocal about equal rights for women. In a 2022 interview with Vogue, taken days after the Supreme Court reversed Roe v. Wade, she remarked:
"I can’t f**k with people who aren’t political anymore. You live in the United States of America. You have to be political. It’s too dire. Politics are killing people."
Lawrence has not publicly reacted to the internet reactions.
