Netflix’s latest sci-fi offering in the form of Atlas, starring Jennifer Lopez, was initially released on May 24, 2024. The movie has a budget of $100 million and delves into an apocalyptic future where AI evolves to dangerous proportions on planet Earth.

Jennifer Lopez plays the role of Atlas Shepherd, a military analyst who investigates and tracks AI criminals, but enters dangerous territory when she is sent to observe Harlan. Harlan is a rogue AI robot who leads a rebellion against humans and plans to eliminate the entire race.

Atlas has an overall rating of 50% on Rotten Tomatoes and has mostly garnered negative reviews, with the movie’s plot and a lack of originality being talked about most prominently. However, such seems to be the magic of the perennial superstar Jennifer Lopez that the film is off to a stellar start on Netflix, having garnered 28.2 million views over the Memorial Day weekend.

That puts it right at the top of the most-watched list for the week on May 20, with the movie featuring in 93 countries’ Top-10 lists.

Atlas heads off to stellar start on Netflix

Perhaps surprisingly, Atlas is not only off to an impressive start on Netflix, it has also become one of the most-watched movies of recent days. Boasting a presence in the top-10 list of a total of 93 countries, Atlas has managed to attract a plethora of viewers despite its early reviews.

After releasing on Netflix worldwide on May 20, it has already amassed a whopping 28.2 million views. The movie, directed by Brad Peyton, brings to viewers a terrifying apocalyptic perspective that revolves around the increasing use of artificial technology by human beings.

In the film, AI technologies evolve to such a degree that they end up viewing human beings as its enemy, simply because of the kind of damage that they have caused to the ecosystem. Harlam, the antagonist of the narrative, is seen building an army of AI robots who aim to completely eliminate humanity, except for a chosen few who will lead the next generation.

Apart from Jennifer Lopez, Atlas also stars multiple other familiar faces. This includes actors such as Simu Liu, Sterling K. Brown, Abraham Popoola, Lana Parrilla, Mark Strong, and Gregory James Cohan.

The movie, owing to its audience reviews, has a Tomatometer score of just 17% on Rotten Tomatoes, although audience reviews have given it some sense of redemption, with a 51% rating. However, as has been seen in multiple movies of late, this film has become somewhat of a sleeper hit and seems to be attracting plenty of attention despite not doing well when it comes to reviews.

It will be interesting to see whether the Jennifer Lopez-starrer can continue to muster similar numbers in the coming time.
