Plot of Babygirl (2024)
The official synopsis of the movie by A24 reads:
"A high-powered CEO puts her career and family on the line when she begins a torrid affair with her much younger intern."
Set in an American corporate environment, the film explores themes of power, desire, and the complexities of relationships within strict workplace hierarchies. As Romy's personal and professional lives become increasingly entangled, her decisions bring complicated changes in her life.
Production of the film
David Hinojosa of 2AM and Halina Reijn of Man Up Films are producers of Babygirl, with independent entertainment company A24 financing the project. Additionally, Julia Oh was listed as an executive producer, but later assumed the producer role alongside Reijn, who also directed and wrote the screenplay. This marks Reijn’s second English-language film.
In a Q&A session with People, lead actress Kidman opened up about the importance of having a female director in a film that features multiple intimate scenes. She told reporters,
"That's what made it so compelling, was being in the hands of Halina, because I knew she wasn't gonna exploit me. I mean, however anyone interprets that, I didn't feel exploited. I felt very much a part of it. It's the story that I wanted to be a part of, that I wanted to tell. And every part of me was committed to that."
The filming for the movie took place in New York City from December 2023 to February 2024.
Inspired by Indecent Proposal and Basic Instinct, the film explores workplace hierarchies in an American setting and the nature of extra-marital affairs. Reijn, driven by a passion for 1980s and 1990s erotic thrillers, aimed to examine women's relationships with their bodies.
