Batman's legacy in pop culture explored
First appearing in Detective Comics #27, DC's Dark Knight has had a hold over pop culture for a long time now. Arguably one of the most popular characters of the last century, the Caped Crusader stands among the great giants of the comic book industry alongside the likes of Superman, Spider-Man, Wonder Woman, and more. The character has been adapted for media many times.
In the comics, Bruce Wayne turns into Gotham's Dark Knight after witnessing his parents be gunned down brutally as a child. Deciding to become a one-man army, he wages his war on crime in the city while making sure never to kill anyone, as it would make him no better than the criminals. Over the years, this has become a staple of the character, with many creators having put their own spin on the DC superhero.
First played by Adam West in the 1969 Batman series, the show was a campy trip that focused on the Dark Knight teaming up with Robin to defeat criminals weekly. Following that, many other actors like Michael Keaton, Kevin Conroy, Val Kilmer, and more brought some dark takes on the character as well.
However, it was Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight Trilogy that helped further popularize the character, with Matt Reeves and Robert Pattinson redefining the character for a new generation as well.
Projects to look out for
In the coming weeks and years, fans are set to receive even more projects based on the character. Starting on October 9, 2024, fans will be able to pick up Scott Snyder's Absolute Batman, which will shake up the status quo of the character going forward. Matt Reeves is also developing The Batman - Part II, which is due in 2026, with a second season of Caped Crusader on the way as well.
