In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Charlize Theron revealed she and Anya Taylor-Joy are trying to find a time to share their experiences shooting the Imperator Furiosa in Mad Max: Fury Road and the Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga.
"We've really been trying to connect. It's been one of those - we can actually make a comedy out of it. We keep running into each other and in places we don't have time to really talk to each other, so we're constantly like, 'Oh my god, OK, let's get together!' And then life takes over."
Charlize believes they'll catch up "when it's right." Charlize Theron played the character of Imperator Furiosa in the 2015 Mad Max: Fury Road, while Taylor-Joy played the character in the 2024 Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, a prequel to the original movie.
Imperator Furiosa is a protagonist in the Mad Max film franchise. She is a warrior who serves the tyrannical leader Immortan Joe.
"She's been so classy and kind in letting me go and do it" — Anya Taylor-Joy about Charlize Theron
Anya Taylor-Joy was recast in Charlize Theron's 2015 Imperator Furiosa role in the recent Mad Max movie. While talking about the role in March 2024 with Empire, Anya said,
"She's been so classy and kind in letting me go and do it. But I feel very lucky that, from the second I read the script, I just knew this person. I felt so fiercely protective over Furiosa and fiercely protective of her interests."
Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga explores Imperator Furiosa's early life and rise within the brutal, post-apocalyptic world. The story also follows her struggles against warlords and her eventual escape from captivity.
During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter in December 2022, Charlize Theron revealed that despite not playing Furiosa in the prequel, she's not mad about it.
"Listen, I'm not mad about (a Mad Max prequel). One of the greatest... actresses is picking up something that I only imagined."
Charlize while speaking to The Hollywood Reporter in 2020, reacted to the recasting and said, "It's a tough one to swallow." She added it was a little heartbreaking since she loved the character.
Anya Taylor-Joy had initially reached out to Charlize Theron about playing her role. Charlize, in a December 2022 interview, revealed that she understands it's very difficult to pick up the phone and say, "Hey, we're going to go do this without you." She also said she loves the franchise filmmaker, George Miller, and knows that she'll talk to him again, but it was "just too hard.'
