Author Neil Gaiman was recently dropped by Dark Horse Comics, following a New York Magazine cover story in which multiple women accused the creator of Sandman and Coraline of s*xual assault. In a public post on X on Friday night, January 25, the publisher wrote:
“Dark Horse takes seriously the allegations against Neil Gaiman and we are no longer publishing his works. Confirming that the Anansi Boys comic series and collected volume have been cancelled..”
This happened six months after Tortoise Media claimed that two women had accused Gaiman of s*xual assault. The six-part podcast, Master, also addressed the claims of two other women in July 2024.
Meanwhile, once the post went public, it garnered netizens’ reactions. People took to the comment section of the X post and expressed their opinions. One said that the comic industry should have done something about this months ago but they allegedly “ordered everyone to be silent on this.”
“Why wasn't this stand taken 6 months ago when it came out?... The comic industry ordered everyone to be silent on this...,” wrote one X user.
Others also said similar things as one user commented that it was the right thing to do and they should support these women. Another one said that they should buy the rights from him and donate the profit to charity.
“It would be better to buy the rights off him, continue to publish, and then give the proceeds to charity for women…,” one user said.
“This is the right thing to do..,” another user accused.
“Now DC Comics needs to do the same,” wrote another X user.
On the other hand, many supported him, as one said that this is like operating on allegations while another said that nothing has been proven against him as of yet.
“We’re still operating like allegations are the same as convictions?” one asked.
“I wonder if Netflix will cancel season 2 of The Sandman,” asked one user.
“Was there a trial that proved anything? No. But cancel culture has ruined this guy's career... They're still allegations now. I'm marking Dark Horse Comics as disloyal to the authors that have made it rich,” one wrote.
Author Neil Gaiman has been accused of s*xual assault by 8 women as of yet
The renowned author of Sandman, Neil Gaiman, was involved in a major s*xual assault case that was detailed in a January 13 cover article of New York Magazine. Several women put forth the allegations which were outlined in the article.
The women who accused him of the wrongdoings allegedly include a fan who first met the author when she was 18, a caretaker for Gaiman's Woodstock, New York, residence, a babysitter for Gaiman and his ex-wife Amanda Palmer's kid, and a lady who said he tried to s*xually assault her on his tour bus.
As detailed in the New York Magazine by numerous women, Neil Gaiman likes rough physical relationships that were allegedly not previously consented to. Gaiman then refuted the accusations in a post on his blog on January 14, writing:
“I have never engaged in non-consensual s*xual activity with anyone. Ever.”
Neil Gaiman further disputed the allegations in his own statement, while he recognized his previous emotional inaccessibility:
“I can’t accept being described as someone I am not.”
Meanwhile, Variety's request for comment on Dark Horse Comics' statement has not yet been answered by Neil Gaiman's representatives.
On the other hand, the accusations have not yet affected Amazon's impending TV version of the Anansi Boys comic, but the comic series was terminated. Nevertheless, the allegations have impacted Gaiman's other endeavors, such as the third season of Good Omens and the Disney adaptation of The Graveyard Book.
However, Netflix Sandman's future is still dangling by a thread.
