Edward Berger's Vatican-set Papal thriller Conclave has now scored the most nominations at the 2025 BAFTA Film Awards, with one more than the number of nominations the trans crime-musical Emilia Pérez got.
Following the BAFTA's longlist announcement after the first round of nominations on January 3, Netflix's Emilia Pérez was leading with 15 nominations across 25 categories, closely followed by Focus Features' Conclave with 14 nods.
However, after the second round of nominations, the latest BAFTA nominees were unveiled on Wednesday, January 15, at the British Academy's headquarters in London.
With last year's BAFTA rising star winner Mia McKenna-Bruce and 2020 BAFTA TV Award winner and The White Lotus star Will Sharpe on hosting duties, the announcement was made 12:00 PM UK Time or 4:00 AM PT.
Following Wednesday's announcement, Conclave has overtaken Emilia Pérez with nominations in 12 categories. The Ralph Fiennes-starrer was nominated for best film, outstanding British film, leading actor for Fiennes, and best director for Oscar winner Edward Berger, among others.
Emilia Pérez, which was just one off from Conclave's totals with 11 nominations, received the best film nod, leading actress for Karla Sofía Gascón, dual supporting actress for Zoe Saldaña and Selena Gomez, and best cinematography, and more.
More from the 2025 BAFTA nominations list amid Conclave's lead
While it's hard to predict who will come out on top come the 2025 BAFTA ceremony on February 16, Conclave and Emilia Peréz are two of the films to watch out for with their 12 and 11 nominations, respectively.
That said, other films also bagged multiple nods from Wednesday's announcement, including The Brutalist, which received nine nominations. It's fighting against Conclave and Emilia Peréz, as well as A Complete Unknown and Anora for best film. Brady Corbet is also in the running for best director, leading actor for Andrien Brody, supporting actress for Felicity Jones, and supporting actor for Guy Pierce.
Joining Fiennes and Brody in the best actor category are Timothée Chalamet for A Complete Unknown, Hugh Grant for Heretic, and Colman Domingo for Sing Sing. Sebastian Stand, who played Donald Trump in The Apprentice is also in the running to win best actor.
Other notable films with multiple nods include Dune: Part Two, Anora, and Wicked, which tied with seven nominations each, and Chalamet's Bob Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown with six nods. Body horror The Substance, which stars Demi Moore, landed five nods, including best director for Coralie Fageat. Robert Eggers' Nosferatu also scored five nods, including in costume design, cinematography, and score categories.
The Belfast-based rap trio biopic Kneecap performed strongly in the Wednesday nominations, earning six out of seven longlist nods, including Outstanding British Film and Outstanding Debut by a British Writer.
However, there were notable snubs, including Daniel Craig for Queer, despite his SAG and Golden Globe nominations. Oscar winners Nicole Kidman (Babygirl) and Denzel Washington (Gladiator II) also missed out on leading actor/actress nominations.
For now, all ayes are waiting for the BAFTA Film Awards ceremony on Sunday, February 16.
