Simon Pegg has recently opened up on his thoughts about a reboot of Shaun of the Dead, released in 2004. The zombie comedy film is considered to be one of the best films of the actor's career and while speaking to The Hollywood Reporter recently during the promotion of The Boys Season 4, Pegg revealed why he won't be a part of the reboot alongside director Edgar Wright.
The Mission: Impossible – Fallout star stated that since Universal Pictures holds the rights, they can decide to remake the film anytime they want to. However, Pegg said that he and Edgar "would be incensed" if a reboot is made. He explained the same by saying:
"The whole thing with Shaun's mum, the stepdad, I had a problematic relationship with my stepfather. It was Edgar's idea to kill the mum. I couldn't believe it when he said that, but it was the best decision. There's so much of our own heart and soul in that film. If someone was to reboot it, it would be a cynical and exploitative exercise."
While Simon Pegg has shared his response towards the Shaun of the Dead reboot in the interview, netizens took to the comments section of Discussing Film's post on X (formerly Twitter), with one of them writing:
"Simon knows constant reboots are killing classic movies and Hollywood as a whole."
There was a section of the audience who praised that a reboot was not being made.
"I'm so glad he's not on board. Not everything needs to be rebooted", a user wrote.
"Don't reboot that! It was fantastic! Leave it alone!", another user wrote.
"Without the original team's heart and soul would be like trying to recreate a classic dish without the secret ingredient. It might look the same, but it'll never taste as good", a third user wrote.
People also explained why a remake was not needed.
"Why would someone even think this? Terrible. Hate these reboots. Zero creativity of original thought", a user stated.
"Perfectly explained. The heart of the film would be gone without Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright's perspective", another user stated.
"No worries! It can't be rebooted! It is as perfect as it can be", a third user stated.
Similar reactions continued in the comments section.
"Idk man, they kill every reboot. Leave it be", a reaction reads.
"Love seeing these directors, actor and actresses speaking out against rebooting their work", a second reaction reads.
Simon Pegg speaks up on another collaboration with director Edgar Wright: Interview statements explained
In his recent conversation with The Hollywood Reporter, Simon Pegg stated that although he loves sequels, he believes that there are stories that end at one point. He added that there is no story for a sequel and the makers have to reset everything that was a part of the original film. The Run Fatboy Run star continued:
"He becomes a new person, but we'd have to then dismantle that in order to give him a new arc. Why? The best thing we can do with cinema is to challenge people and get them to see things they haven't seen before and experience new things. Entertainment is the most overrated function of art."
The Burke & Hare star said that Shaun of the Dead is a personal film and it continues to have a huge fanbase. He even referred to Zack Snyder's action horror film, Dawn of the Dead, saying that he disliked it since it was taken from George Romero's film.
Furthermore, Simon Pegg was questioned if he would collaborate with Edgar Wright for another time. He replied by saying things have changed for both of them over the years and mentioned:
"The biggest challenge that we have right now is finding a moment to get together and spend six, seven weeks, to get our first draft out and come up with the idea. But we're constantly looking for that. Edgar came over to my house last year and stayed for a week, and we just sort of talked about films and what we want to do next."
Simon Pegg has been appearing as Hugh Campbell Sr. in the ongoing fourth season of the Amazon Prime Video series, The Boys. Simon Pegg will reprise his role as Benji Dunn in the upcoming eighth film of the Mission: Impossible film franchise. The spy action film is arriving on the big screen on May 23, 2025.
